Located approximately 26 miles from the City of Fairbanks, Fort Knox is a centre of excellence for the Company as one of the few cold weather heap leach facilities in the world. In 2016, the site poured its seven millionth ounce of gold, 20 years into its mine life. The initial Gilmore Expansion Project is expected to extend mine life to 2030.

Job Description

Assist with the implementation of programs and procedures to ensure environmental compliance for Fairbanks Gold Mining, Inc. Participate in the development of environmental management plans, monitoring plans, and permit applications. Supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the Environmental Superintendent. Responsible for data management including on-site document and corporate portal document management.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop, revise, and update environmental management plans, monitoring plans, and other environmental documents as required by permits and for management of environmental programs in accordance with the requirements of Fairbanks Gold Mining, Inc. and the corporate office.
  • Preparation of regulatory reporting including Title V and Title 1 semi-annual and annual air reports, APDES monthly and annual discharge reports, Toxic Release Inventory reporting, APMA reporting etc.
  • Oversight and maintain obligation tracking system for permits, agreements, and regulations required by regulatory agencies and the corporate EHS Management System.
  • Manage environmental sections of Fort Knox portal to ensure compliance with standards and policies of Fairbanks Gold Mining, Inc. and the corporate office.
  • Maintain sampling and monitoring databases for water, air quality, and other permit requirements to provide reports required for permit compliance.
  • Assist with the training of site personnel in environmental compliance issues.
  • Interpret Plans and Permits for Environmental Technicians performing environmental monitoring and sampling.
  • Assist with environmental studies and projects.
  • Maintain a competent level of knowledge of environmental permit conditions and environmental regulations applicable to the site.
  • Participate in development and implementation of plans and studies for permitting new projects.
  • Develop and foster strong relationship with agency personnel.
  • Ability to supervise staff.
  • Compliance with all company policies and procedures, including, but not limited to safety, confidentiality, and environmental policies.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Meet or exceed established performance expectations set by management.
  • Work safely in all areas and identify potential safety hazards and work with management to correct them.
  • Willing to be on an on-call schedule on a one-week rotation (Friday evening to Monday morning and week nights every four to six weeks).
  • Perform other duties as required.


Education and Experience

  • BA or BS degree in engineering, (preferably environmental, civil, or mining), natural resources management, geology or biological sciences.
  • Environmental management experience in an industrial setting.
  • Working knowledge of the provisions of all environmental permits and regulations.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Strong background in environmental engineering or sciences.


Skills

  • Ability to develop and update environmental documents (Project descriptions, EMP, SPCC Plan, SWPP Plan, etc.).
  • Ability to work well with mine site personnel in various departments and positions throughout the site.
  • Computer literate to an intermediate level.
  • Attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
  • Must have solid verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work with others in a team environment and also as a member of the management team.
  • Capable of wearing negative pressure air-purifying respirators.


Reporting Relationships

• Typically reports to the Environmental Superintendent.
