Your Specific Responsibilities:

The Florida Department of Health is seeking a human health risk assessor to join its interdisciplinary Hazardous Waste Site Health Risk Assessment program. As part of one of the premier federally funded programs in the country, the position assesses and responds to site- and community-specific issues involving human exposure to hazardous substances in the environment by using on-line environmental health research and various risk assessment tools. The position evaluates the public health impact from exposure to these environmental contamination and ensures the citizens of Florida have the best information available to understand health risks and what can be done to reduces/eliminates health and exposure risk. The position serves as liaison, consults with and provides technical assistance to the public, county health departments, state laboratories, universities, and other state or federal agencies regarding environmental toxicology and contamination. The position provides interpretation of pertinent public health statutes, rules, policies, and standards and interprets Florida Statutes and regulations related to environmental programs. The position coordinates with local, state, and federal agencies on specific projects and participates in the planning, development, and implementation of interagency agreements, programs, and research projects related to the assessment of human health risk and potential impacts from exposure to environmental contaminants. The position represents the department at public meetings, hearings, and workshops and provides oversight for the implementation of a statewide environmental health program as well as assists state and federal agencies in developing environmental standards and risk communication for the mitigation or minimization of human health impact from exposure to environmental contaminants. The position also assists the Program Administrator in managing programmatic grant activities in accordance with program requirements including preparing grant application packages, projecting and scheduling projects and activities and preparing grant reports as well as makes recommendations to the program administrator on proposed and existing projects and activities, undergoing review for consistency with state laws, regulations and policies.

Qualifications:

The Florida Department of Health is seeking a candidate with a 4-year bachelor's degree from a college or university with a major in one of the physical or natural sciences (e.g., biochemistry, biological science, chemical science, environmental science) or engineering and three years of professional experience OR a master's degree from a college or university with a major in one of the physical or natural sciences or engineering and two years of professional experience OR a doctorate from a college or university with a major in one of the physical or natural sciences or engineering and one year of professional experience.

In addition, the Florida Department of Health are seeking a candidate with experience or training in human health risk assessments, toxicology, and environmental investigations. Candidates should be proficient in technical report writing and working with diverse communities. Candidates should be able to determine work priorities and ensure proper completion of work assignments as well as be able to solve problems and make decisions. Out-of-town travel averages about one night a month.
