The Environmental Health & Safety Sr. Specialist will supervise safety, health and environment compliance across Bay Center. This role will execute, continue to implement, and maintain employee standards and programs to drive compliance and achieve safe and responsible operation. This individual will have the unique opportunity to continue to build out standards, processes, trainings, and programs for a new food manufacturing venture.

The Environmental Health & Safety Sr. Specialist will assist in recognizing changing safety, health, and environmental risks and hazards. This includes internal hazards such as changes to the plant and external hazards such as regulatory changes. This individual will also supervise continuous program improvement and their consistent implementation at the facility including wastewater, chemicals, and oil storage areas. Strong communication skills are recognized as essential to achieve this goal. This role will report to the Principal Team Leader of Environmental Health and Safety.

  • Assist in developing and helping to ingrain a strong culture of safety at the organization
  • Implement, maintain and test compliance, risk management, contingency standards, processes, trainings, systems, and programs for a manufacturing facility with Class 3 flammable liquids and significant automation
  • Work with the Bay Center teams to drive adherence to compliance, risk management, and contingency planning programs through training, monitoring, and periodic auditing
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and local governing authorities
  • Conduct periodic audits via worksite observations
  • Submit safety, health and environment regulatory filing and permits
  • Plan and give Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) training
  • Conduct community engagement meetings (e.g. fire department) as appropriate
  • Interpret and disseminate information on regulatory matters to operations leaders
  • Conduct Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) reports; review vendors/equipment
  • Evaluate and improve programs in response to changing risks inclusive of new regulation
  • Participate in regular meetings with plant management
  • Identify safety, health and environment associated with contemplated initiatives or facility changes
  • Engage multi-disciplinary departments in safety, health and environment improvement initiatives
  • Lead monthly Safety Committee meetings and address and resolve safety-related issues reported
  • Supervise continuous program improvement and their consistent implementation at the facility including wastewater, chemicals and oil storage areas
  • Perform risk-based environmental health and safety job hazard assessments
  • Provide routine and ad hoc reports related to risk management and workers' compensation claims
  • Execute emergency response plans drills
  • Supervise safety, health and environment inspections, provide improvement guidance, and verify issue resolution
  • Investigate accidents or incidents to discover root causes to prevent reoccurrence
  • Maintain and implement safety, health and environment compliance tracking programs and recordkeeping systems
  • Update policies/SOPs as needed
  • Perform other related responsibilities, as needed, to support Bay Center's business objectives
  • 5% travel required: supplier visits, compliance trainings, and related conferences

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health and Safety, or other related field preferred or equivalent experience
  • 3-5 years previous manufacturing safety experience in food industry or supply chain
  • Experience executing safety processes, and strategies to support of a food manufacturing facility
  • Good knowledge of standards, processes, systems, and contingencies related to general safety, quality specifications, local regulations, and governmental regulations specifically including EPA, OSHA, and Cal/OSHA
  • An understanding and experience developing compliance and risk performance metrics, measurement, and enforcement
  • Experience developing and executing employee training programs
  • Strong knowledge of innovations in supply chain, risk management, emergency response planning, and contingency execution
  • Demonstrated knowledge of efficient and safe manufacturing operations and workplace risk evaluations
  • Knowledgeable of regulation updates and industry leading practices
  • Strong PC proficiency to include Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint; Working knowledge of statistical software programs
  • Knowledge of quality systems, audits, regulatory, statistics and risk management methods
  • Prior supervisory and coaching experienced preferred
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work in multifunctional teams
  • Knowledge of EHS principles required
  • Knowledge of Continuous Improvement
  • Good verbal and written communications skills
  • Strong attention to detail and technical writing ability
  • Must be able to handle multiple assignments

  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • 3 years. Preferred relevant experience: 5+ years
  • Certified Safety Professional - Board of Certification Safety Professionals
  • Accredited Risk Management Professional
  • Certified Professional Environmental Auditor
  • Certified Process Safety Auditor
  • Registered Environmental Health Specialist
