Microsoft, together with the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, and Verily Life Sciencesare partnering to accelerate the next generation of the Terra platform (https://terra.bio/about/our-team/) - an open, extensible, scalable, and secure platform for biomedical informatics and data science research. The partnership is committed to expanding Terra with the addition of Microsoft Azure's data and AI technologies, global capabilities, and health & life science customers and partners.
We are looking for a computational biologist or bioinformatician with a deep appreciation for the complexities of working with genomics data, who has a track record of using genomics and other omics datasets for scientific discoveries. You are very familiar with the different file formats, data standards, and ontologies used in the life sciences. You love the collaborative nature of modern scientific teams and enjoy interacting with scientists from different organizations.
In this role, you will be actively engaging the broader life sciences community and help provide strategic direction for how Terra evolves on Azure for academic, clinical, and industry scientists.

Responsibilities
- Interact closely with scientists across academia and industry to define and drive data acquisition strategies for the Terra platform on Azure.
- Engage with program directors from public and private funding agencies, promoting Terra on Azure as a repository for Biobank data.
- Engage with the scientific community to stay updated on genomics technologies and platforms, to provide an informed opinion on how data generated from these will be analyzed by bioinformaticians, computational biologist, and data scientists.
- Demonstrate thought leadership in the bioinformatics and genomics space and credibly represent Microsoft at global industry events, conferences, symposiums, etc.
- Write technical documents, blog posts, publish in top journals or conferences.
- Be the scientific advisor for Microsoft teams who are engaging with Life Science customers, helping them understand how data and tools on Terra fits into their R&D process.
- Work closely withproductandengineeringterms to realize new strategies and plans for driving adoption for Terra on Azure.
Qualifications
Required:
- Master's degree in Bioinformatics, Biology, or related field. A PhD is a plus but not required.
- 7 or more, combined years of experience, in genomics, bioinformatics, or computational biology, demonstrated by an academic record of scientific publications or proceedings, or relevant experience in industry.
Preferred:
- Experience working as key personnel on large genomics/genetics grants or consortiums, or cross-functional research teams in industry.
- Deep expertise with biomedical and life sciences datasets - you know the difference between TopMed and TCGA, GnomAD and ENCODE.
- Experience with workflow managers such as Cromwell, Nextflow, or Snakemake.
- Researcher focused - demonstrates deep empathy and understanding towards genomics researchers.
- Comfortable with ambiguity and able to work independently.
- Excellent communicator who feels completely at ease at presenting complex scientific concepts to both an expert and non-expert audience.
- Effective collaborator experienced in creating scientific partnerships and driving consensusacross teams.
