Overview
Aerojet Ordnance Tennessee is seeking to hire a Engineer, Safety Health & Environment Generalist in Jonesborough, Tennessee . This position will be responsible for performing safety assignments under general supervision and following established policies. The successful candidate will implement the Company's safety, health & environmental (SH&E) programs to ensure compliance with applicable local, state and federal regulations, as well as requirements of the Department of Defense. The candidate will assist in investigating accidents, participate in reviews to ensure SH&E criteria are met, and conduct training on safe working conditions, practices, and proper use of safety equipment. Responsibilities will include conducting periodic audits and inspections, implementing corrective and preventative actions, evaluating workplace hazards and implementing measures to control risks. This position will report to the Jonesborough Sr. Manager of SH&E and will work in a team environment.

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)
25% - Performs a variety of safety tasks related to Aerojet Ordnance Tennessee SH&E programs, methods and practices, supports waste disposal activities, performs as the back-up Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) for the Jonesborough facility, assists and supports senior SH&E (Safety, Health and Environment) staff with projects as directed. Reviews, analyzes, and evaluates facilities, methods, practices, and procedures for compliance with SH&E standards. Recognition, evaluation, an drecommendation of measures for control of chemical, radiological, safety, and physical hazards present at work site.
25% - Participates in, supports, or otherwise assists in investigating accidents, incidents, near misses, environmental incidents and workers compensation cases by determining root causes and recommending corrective/preventative actions. Coordinates with SH&E Sr. Manager, SH&E support staff, supervisors and employees to track actions to completion.
25% - Participates in, supports, or otherwise assists in routine audits and inspections to identify and eliminate hazards. Also supports development of job safety/process hazard analyses (JSAs/PHA's) and evaluation of managment of change (MOC) for new chemicals, facilities, equipment, or processes. Participates in, supports, or otherwise assists in internal and external SH&E audits for compliance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations. Provides information/input for and supports facility capital projects.
20% - Develops and conducts training of safe work practices, proper use of safety equipment, and general compliance with SH&E regulations and company standards for employees, visitors, vendors, and contractors.
5% - Supports emergency preparedness and assists in emergency response situations, including first aid, CPR, and spill response.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in an appropriate SH&E discipline and two (2) years of directly related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of applicable local, state and federal SH&E codes and regulations. Experience with proper use, handling, storage, receiving and shipment of chemicals, hazardous materials and radioactive materials. Knowledge of and experience with emergency preparedness, response actions, scientific methods of observation and analysis, data gathering techniques, analysis and interpretation of data. Basic principles of environmental management compliance and protections. Ability to perform radiation monitoring, detection and sampling events. Ability to gather, develop, maintain and communicate SH&E data, statistics and technical/non-technical reports. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both oral and written. Ability to operate effective in a team environment and interface with all levels of employees, vendors, customers, regulators, corporate personnel and customers. Certified Safety Professional and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist and/or Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) preferred. Experience with OSHA and Worker's Compensation desired. Experience with Waste Water desired.
The work environment may require a combination of indoor and outdoor activity (hot, cold, wet, humid conditions) with a varied amount of walking, standing, sitting, climbing (i.e. ladders, stair, scaffolding, ramps), balance (maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces), bending, reaching, handling/fingering (seizing, holding, grasping, turning picking, pinching), stooping, kneeling, crouching and ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds. Work may require the ability to operate material handling equipment (forklift, crane, hoist, man lift, etc.) in a safe manner. While performing the duties of this job, employees may work around variable noise levels or with fume or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, etc. requiring the use of personal protective equipment such as face protection (safety glasses, goggles, face shield), foot protection (i.e. steel toed shoes, rubber boots, etc.), gloves, hard hat, shop coat and hearing protection. Some positions may require Respirator clearance up to and including the Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Level A clearance. Work requires the ability to change into or out of personal protective equipment when entering or exiting manufacturing, laboratory, or other areas. Some employees may be required to drive between various locations within the Company facility or between locations. Work duties may also be required to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer and/or the ability to travel by air or auto. Ability to distinguish colors may also be necessary. This position may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
