Animal Care Supervisor (direct hire)
Overview: Kelly Services® is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic individual to join our client's team as an Animal Care Supervisor. This is a direct hire position with a leader in animal research committed to responsible, ethical, and humane treatment of animals.
Responsibilities:
- Provide supervision of personnel and operations to ensure the care of laboratory animals, facilities, and animal environments. Independently handle routine personnel-related issues; assist in the handling of complex personnel-related issues.
- Oversee and assist with monitoring of animal areas for adherence to regulatory agencies (i.e.: AALAC, USDA, CDC) requirements and adherence to industry standards for animal care and welfare.
- Provide direct daily supervision and review work of assigned departmental employees to ensure accuracy and to ensure adherence to pertinent departmental policies, practices, SOPs, safety procedures and protocols. Schedule and prioritize workload of group members.
- Assist in the coordination and scheduling of activities of the department through hands-on technical support, delegation of responsibility and/or authority to departmental subordinates.
- Oversee the basic day to day care of laboratory animals, facilities, and animal environments.
- Inspect the animal facilities and animal room environments in assigned areas to ensure that they meet acceptable standards. Submit work orders for improvements as necessary.
- Assist site management in addressing unique and difficult animal care and welfare issues.
- Evaluate animal environments for compliance with husbandry and animal care standards as set forth by AAALAC, USDA, company SOP's, and other relevant agencies. Make suggestions to site management for improvements based on observations and involvement.
- May administer, review, and recommend possible improvements in animal welfare or husbandry programs, projects, and/or processes as assigned.
- Participate in team meetings and provide feedback to staff.
- Work closely with subordinate husbandry and technical staff to complete all husbandry and prestudy projects. Provide animal care/husbandry expertise and technical guidance as needed.
- Ensure all departmental equipment is maintained in good working condition and that departmental area(s) are maintained in a clean and orderly condition.
- Identify training and development needs of direct reports. Assist in the development, implementation and delivery of departmental training programs; ensure that direct reports receive departmental orientation and necessary on-the-job training. Oversee maintenance of group training manual and training records.
- May assist in performing animal census and document location of all animals to meet requirements of regulatory agencies (i.e.: USDA, CDC). organizational structure of direct reports and staffing requirements. Assist in the development of a departmental plan for backup and succession of key technical personnel.
- Assist in the development, maintenance and communication of departmental systems and SOPs. Assist in the development and communication of job descriptions for subordinate positions.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Education: Associate's degree (A.A. /A.S.) or equivalent in life sciences or related discipline. Bachelor's Degree preferred.
- Experience: 4-6 years related experience. No less than 2 years of direct experience specifically with non-human primates , 1+ year leadership experience preferred.
- Certification/Licensure: AALAS Certification at ALAT level required, LAT or LATG preferred.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of federal regulations and guidelines relating to the care of laboratory animals including facility inspection, procurement, and distribution of laboratory animals preferred.
- Knowledge of animal care and welfare standards as defined by AAALAC, USDA, CDC, US Fish and Wildlife preferred.
- Must be computer literate, experience with Microsoft required, Enos Database and SAP preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Regularly operates a computer and other office equipment, such as a copy machine, fax, and computer printer.
- Occasionally operates cagewash and other sanitation equipment.
- Occasionally moves animal racks, cages, and other equipment.
- Regularly moves from one building to another to perform oversight and training of subordinates and observe animal areas.
- Must occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
- Regularly provides information to and receives information from/through various technologies, media, sources and contacts. Must be able to accurately exchange accurate information in these situations.
- May require occasional travel.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Both general office and vivarium environment working conditions.
- While performing the duties of this job the employee frequently works in general office conditions where the noise level is low to moderate and occasionally works in the animal vivarium where the noise level is moderate to high.
- The employee occasionally wears protective clothing (goggles, face shield, surgical mask, cap, gloves, scrubs, boots); works in tight or confined spaces; works with sharp objects; works near toxic or caustic chemicals; works near biohazards; and works with live animals with risk of exposure to allergens and/or zoonotic diseases.
- While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, unpleasant odors, and wet, humid, and/or extreme temperature conditions.
- Employees must be able to lift, move, manipulate, and/or hold heavy objects up to and including 50 pounds; this includes work materials, equipment, and/or animals.
