Environmental Health & Safety Consultant

Triumvirate Environmental is seeking a strong EHS Consultant to deliver short and long term consulting and staff augmentation engagements for clients in the greater NYC, Orange County, NY, Westchester County, NY and NJ areas. This individual will have a good understanding of EH&S concepts, issues, and challenges and will be able to identify unmet issues and opportunities with resolutions, for current and new clients while ensuring to the highest level of satisfaction.

The primary goal of the EH&S Consultant is to protect Client employees, their contractors and customers and to safeguard the work and surrounding environment. The EH&S Consultant inspects and evaluates the environment, equipment and processes in working areas to ensure compliance with governmental safety regulations, environmental regulations and industry standards. Usually working under the supervision of more senior EH&S Consultants, or the Client EH&S staff, they also help to implement and evaluate safety programs, testing and inspecting air, water, machines, conducting training, investigating incidents and accidents and acting as a subject matter resource about other elements of the work environment. The EH&S Consultant must have excellent interpersonal skills and writing abilities, be self-directed and able to work in a variety of industry settings, client cultures and work locations.

Experience at this level: 2 to 5 years for a Consultant level, or 3 to 6 years for a Senior Consultant level working experience in EHS.

Individuals should be competent to perform at least several of these tasks without supervision:
  • Measure occupational and environmental hazards, such as noise or radiation, using calibrated scientific equipment and/or collecting samples of dust, vapors or gases according to a defined operating procedure. Measure the effectiveness of engineered control systems such as fume hoods.
  • Participate in the inspection and examination of machinery and equipment, such as lifting devices, machine guards, or scaffolding.
  • Conduct workplace safety inspections according to a defined procedure, evaluating the use of personal protective equipment, such as respirators, respirators, protective eyewear, or hardhats, according to applicable regulations. These inspections of the workplace will involve talking with workers and observing their work.
  • Identify potential accident and health hazards, such as toxic vapors, mold, mildew, and explosive gas-air mixtures and help implement appropriate control measures, such as adjustments to ventilation systems.
  • Help investigate accidents and injuries, identifying causes and recommending remedial action.
  • Communicate with Client personnel regarding workplace safety issues, recommending corrective actions.
  • Conduct routine EHS safety trainings such as new employee orientation, hazard communication, fork truck trainings, without supervision.
  • Write reports, including accident reports, and enter information on required Occupational Safety and Health Administration recordkeeping forms.
  • Assist in the development of specific areas of occupational health and safety systems, including drafting or updating policies, procedures, and manuals.


Technical Education

Bachelor's degree or above in occupational health, safety, or a related scientific field, such as biology, chemistry or engineering. At this level, the EH&S Consultant should have completed two or more industry-recognized trainings listed below, and may be considering some postgraduate coursework and/or in the process of obtaining a master's degree in health physics, industrial hygiene, occupational safety, ergonomics or a related subject.
  • OHSA 10 or 30 hour General Industry Safety
  • OSHA 10 or 30 hour Construction Safety
  • Principles and Practices of Biosafety (ABSA)
  • HAZWOPR (40 hour)
  • DOT/IATA Hazardous Materials Transportation

Professional Affiliations

Depending upon personal interest and career goals, the EH&S Consultant should be an active member in at least one national professional Safety organization including Local Chapters such as:
  • Health Physics Society (HPS)
  • American Society of Safety Engineers ASSE)
  • American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA)
  • American Biological Safety Association (ABSA)

Certifications

The EH&S Consultant should be working towards meeting the requirements of and obtaining one professional designation/certification, depending upon individual interest and career goals such as:
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP)
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
  • Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST)
  • Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST)
  • Certified Health Physicist (CHP) credential
  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)
