Scientist, Organoid/Cell Biologist

Novome is building genetically engineered microbial medicines (GEMMs) that perform defined activities in the human gut to treat chronic diseases. We have developed the first platform for controlled colonization of the gut with engineered therapeutic bacteria and are applying this to multiple disease areas as well as expanding our platform capabilities. We are moving our lead program in secondary hyperoxaluria into Phase 1 clinical trials, and are actively progressing programs in IBS, IBD, Immuno-oncology, and other indications.

We are seeking scientists to translate our foundational advances in microbiome engineering into novel therapeutics that address high unmet patient needs. The Scientist in this role will be responsible for establishing relevant 2D and 3D cell culture models, using both primary and immortalized cell culture systems, to lead phenotypic characterization of therapeutic bacterial candidate strains. Scientists will work in a collaborative, transparent environment with other gut microbiota, synthetic biology, disease area and clinical experts to bring new therapeutic bacterial strains from conception to IND filing.

Responsibilities
  • Drive translation of bacteria with novel engineered activities from in vitro proof-of-concept through to IND filing
  • Develop relevant 2D and 3D cell culture model systems for phenotypic characterization of therapeutic bacterial strains and molecules produced by therapeutic strains
  • Establish Novome's mammalian tissue culture facility and maintain best practices
  • Work with scientists across different disciplines to design in vitro and ex vivo experiments leveraging molecular assays and mammalian cell culture to support multiple platforms/programs
  • Contribute and develop domain knowledge of therapeutic GEMMs behavior to evaluate host biology and biomarker modulation
  • Work closely with clinical and disease area experts to envision therapeutic strategies

Key Qualifications
  • PhD in molecular/cell biology, microbiology, cancer biology, immunology, or a related discipline
  • Proven expertise employing complex in vitro mammalian cell culture models (2D and 3D) to draw conclusions about disease biology is required
  • Proven expertise in the design, development, and execution of a broad range of biochemical and cell-based assays
  • Prior experience with isolating and culturing primary cells, using polarized epithelial models, culturing patient derived organoids, and reporter cell systems is desired
  • Experience working with gastrointestinal tissue samples and GI cell lines is a plus
  • Experience with cell culture assays of bacterial infection/colonization models is a plus
  • Experience with mammalian gene editing is a plus
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills
  • Eagerness to work collaboratively on a team of multi-disciplinary experts; highly adaptable to the fast-paced needs of a biotech startup
