There's a critical need for a more diverse education workforce in Minnesota and you can make all the difference. Join an innovative cohort dedicated to creating a career pathway to teaching through AmeriCorps service.

As an Emerging Educator, you'll help students in kindergarten through third grade become better readers. With great training and onsite coaching, we'll prepare you to work one-on-one or in small groups to help kids develop their reading skills and confidence! You'll also engage in professional development opportunities and create goals to prepare for a future career as an educator.

We are currently recruiting for the 2021-22 program year with opportunities beginning in July. Your commitment to this program will be 35 hours per week.

This is an AmeriCorps member position with Reading Corps. Although the earnings are modest, the rewards are great! You'll join an amazing group members, determined to help students be more.

  • Be a change maker by providing one-on-one or small group reading help during school hours.
  • Be committed to helping students build their skills and confidence.
  • Be ready to grow by creating a development plan to articulate career goals.
  • Be impactful by participating in training, workshops and events focused on developing future teachers and educators.
  • Be the motivation and represent Reading Corps at school-sponsored activities to help build awareness of Reading Corps and early literacy.
  • Be an ambassador of the program by sharing your experience with the wider community.


Emerging Educators receive a perks package that includes:
  • A stipend of $835 paid every 2 weeks
  • Up to $4,300 for tuition or student loans*
  • Federal student loan forbearance and interest repayment
  • Individual health insurance - Monthly premium 100% covered
  • Child care assistance - Based on family size and income

*The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award can be used to pay tuition or repay qualified student loans. Individuals 55+ may gift their award to their child, grandchild, foster child or step-child.

Great Emerging Educators come from all walks of life. The most important qualification is a desire to help children succeed. That said, you also need to meet the following minimum qualifications by the time you begin your service.
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Can speak, read and write English fluently
  • A citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States*
  • Agree to and successfully complete a background check
  • Strong desire to become an educator.
  • Have knowledge of and/or lived experience within the community where the school is located.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency that aligns with the school community.
  • Ability to connect with elementary-aged students using an asset-based approach.

*Applicants who have received deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are not eligible to serve as AmeriCorps members at this time.
