Our school comprises one of the largest and most diverse academic aquatic and fisheries sciences program in the United States. Our faculty conduct innovative research from the organism to the ecosystem scale, and are recognized leaders in aquatic biology, sustainable fisheries management, and aquatic resource conservation. SAFS has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Engineer/Scientist - Assistant in the Marine Ecophysiology Team laboratory lead by Dr. Jacqueline Padilla-Gamiño. The Padilla-Gamiño lab research focuses on how climate change affects the ecology, physiology and reproduction of ecologically and economically important marine organisms, and what their potential is for adaptation to climate change. We integrate a diverse set of techniques, ranging from field observations, to biogeochemical and molecular analyses to identify signals of resilience in a changing ocean. This position involves both collection of samples in the field and laboratory processing of samples. Invertebrate, sediment and water samples are processed in the laboratory throughout the year with field work and sample collection typically occurring during the summer and winter. RESPONSIBILITIES •Processing a variety of water, sediment and other invertebrate samples by extracting and characterizing microplastics using u-FTIR microscopy. •Participating in field work including performing snorkel and diving, collecting invertebrates, and performing quadrat surveys of beach materials and benthic organisms. •Participating in lab work in the aquatic facility at University of Washington. •Entering data in Excel spreadsheets. •Assisting in lab upkeep. •Disposing of processed samples and laboratory chemicals. Equivalent education/experience may substitute. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration. DESIRED Experience extracting microplastics and using u-FTIR spectroscopy to characterize microplastics. Experience in collecting invertebrate samples, experience snorkeling and diving, proficiency in MS Excel, valid driver's license.
