Research Analyst - Energy & Climate

Rhodium Group is recruiting a Research Analyst to join the company's Energy & Climate team. Preferred location is Rhodium's Oakland, California office.

Position Description

Rhodium Group is looking for an entrepreneurial and talented Research Analyst to join our world-class team of economists, policy analysts, researchers, and data engineers. As a Research Analyst on Rhodium's Energy & Climate team, you will help us launch a new and exciting phase of our international work and support the build-out of the ClimateDeck, our data visualization and analytics platform that provides global and US GHG data and analysis of energy and climate policy developments to users in the nonprofit, philanthropic, and government sectors. As a core member of our data analytics team, you will help design and lead analysis of energy and climate change pathways for the US and countries around the world.

Position Responsibilities

  • Manipulate and analyze energy and economic data sets using a suite of analytic tools, including excel and python.
  • Evaluate existing and/or develop novel analytical approaches for analyzing energy and climate policy and market impacts.
  • Design data dashboards in Rhodium's secure customized web portal.
  • Contribute to Rhodium reports and research notes.
  • Work across Rhodium teams to identify and develop new energy and emissions data and research projects.
  • Help communicate research findings to your team, decision-makers and the public.


Qualifications

Attractive candidates will have the following qualifications:
  • Master's degree in data science, engineering, economics, environmental or political science, public policy or related disciplines (or 4+ years of experience working in energy, climate change, or a related field).
  • 1-2 years of experience working with data in the field of energy, climate change, or a related field.
  • Strong mathematics and statistics background and proficiency in manipulating and analyzing large data sets.
  • Programming skills (R or Python).
  • Strong understanding of the energy system and underlying subsectors including electric power, industry, transportation, buildings and oil & gas.
  • Organized and self-directed with proven problem-solving skills.
  • Professionalism and intellectual curiosity.
  • Experience with energy system models, such as NEMS, IPM, ReEDS, MARKAL or GCAM a plus.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills or experience with public engagement is a plus.


Location and Travel Requirements

  • The preferred location for this role is Oakland, California.
  • Occasional domestic or international travel (
