Job Description
Plan and direct all aspects of the environmental program at a BAE Systems ship repair facility in Norfolk, VA. The position is primarily responsible for management of all environmental policies and procedures with the primary goal of maintaining facility compliance with all applicable local, state and federal regulations pertaining to the environment. Develops and implements programs to ensure that the environment regulatory obligations are fulfilled in a cost-effective manner and that environmental risks are effectively managed. Represent company in communications with local, state and federal agencies including but not limited to the U.S. EPA, U.S. Coast Guard, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VADEQ), and the Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Develop strategies and recommend and implement appropriate standards, practices and procedures to minimize potential environmental risks associated with ship repair operations.
- Maintain awareness of environmental laws and regulations to determine their applicability and impact on the facility; monitor changes in environmental laws and regulations and advise upper management as to how substantive changes in state or federal regulations may affect operations.
- Draft or review all regulatory permit applications and certificates and reports submitted to regulatory agencies in accordance with permit conditions.
- Identify specific projects, facility activities, or production operations of potential environmental concern and develop strategies to address these concerns.
- Develop and direct training of the facility s spill response team and monitor progress of in-house environmental awareness training for shipyard employees.
- Review proposed capital expenditures for facility modifications or equipment purchases to evaluate potential environmental impacts.
- Serve as the company s Incident Commander to direct facility responses to environmental spills or emergencies and oversee cleanup or mitigation of environmental problems.
- Direct pollution prevention, waste minimization and waste management activities for the company.
- Draft/review all Process Control Procedures submitted in accordance with contract requirements.
- Represent the company on technical or environmental committees with representatives of regulatory agencies, industry or trade groups, or citizen advocacy organizations and/or academic researchers.
- Monitor performance of the BAE Systems employees and subcontractors working on vessels in other shipyards, terminals, or on military bases to ensure that the company is complying with the other facilities environmental policies and rules.
- Monitor progress of the Environmental Department staff with daily responsibilities such as routine facility BMP and other inspections, waste disposal, record keeping, permit compliance monitoring, operating budget management, and related activities.
- Perform duties consistent with the company s ISO 14001:2015 certified Environmental Management System and as necessary to minimize environmental risks associated with company operations.
- Maintain accurate and timely recordkeeping in accordance with BAE Systems corporate reporting requirements for environmental sustainability metrics.
- Serve as the contact for environmental regulatory agencies inspecting the facility/operations
This position includes activities related to hazardous materials/waste, air quality, water quality/stormwater, industrial wastewater, SPCC/oil transfer, facility inspections, and emergency response. Individual will implement requirements for characterization, accumulation and disposal of hazardous waste. Sample collection and preparation for laboratory analysis. These duties and activities may be conducted at all job sites where BAE Systems may be working.
Environmental Supervisor will collect and analyze data and maintain detailed records for submission of reports to regulatory agencies. Reports include, but are not limited to, submittals related to Title V Air Permit, NPDES Permit and Stormwater, Biennial Reports for Hazardous Waste, TRI reports, Tier II and others.
Environmental Supervisor will have frequent contact with trades/subcontractors for workrequiring interface with environmental program requirements including training of personnel and presentation of information.
Required Education, Experience, & Skills
Typical Education and Experience
Typically a Bachelor's Degree and 4-6 years of work experience preferably in a supervisor role
Required Skills and Education
Significant knowledge of local, state and federal laws and regulations relating to environmental matters.
Knowledge of chemistry of hazardous materials/waste. Initial and Annual Refresher Training in hazardous waste management (RCRA).
Knowledge in ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management Systems, including experience in auditing of requirements.
Maintain a valid State Drivers License.
Must be able to obtain DBIDS access to Naval Facilities.
