Linfield University is seeking a part-time Lab Coordinator & Environmental Studies Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Instructor to join the Environmental Studies department. The Lab Coordinator & Environmental Studies GIS Instructor is responsible for teaching Introduction to Geographical Information Systems (ENVS 230), developing and maintaining GIS labs for various classes, assisting students using ArcPro in projects, maintaining the Environmental Studies Lab and storeroom, and assisting faculty in laboratory instruction. Also sets up labs, maintains new and existing lab inventory, and ensures that all OSHA standards are upheld. Review of applications will begin immediately and will close on Thursday May 20, 2021.

Schedule: This is a part-time staff position. The work schedule will be three days per week from 8am - 5pm, from August 15 - June 15.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaching
  • Teach Introduction to Geographical Information Systems (GIS), lecture and laboratory.
  • Provide guest lecture about GIS in Environmental Science.
  • Develop, update, and teach GIS labs for Environmental Science, Forest Ecology, and Conservation Biology. Assist students with GIS projects in the Capstones courses and for research projects.
  • Assist students with other GIS projects.
  • Assist faculty in all aspects of laboratory instruction.

ENVS Laboratory Coordination
  • Set up labs for Environmental Studies (including, but not limited to, Environmental Science, Forest Ecology, Conservation Biology, and the ENVS senior capstone courses): make solutions, calibrate and maintain instruments, sterilize supplies, and set out supplies for lab. Ensure clean-up of equipment and supplies at the end of sessions.
  • Maintenance of Environmental Studies lab and storeroom: ensure cleanliness of labs; store equipment and supplies after use; ensure chemicals are labeled and stored in proper containers; ensure storeroom is clean; ensure cabinets are locked.
  • Assist teaching and research assistants with project set up and laboratory safety.
  • Assist in grading lab notebooks, help test new lab experiments, and contribute to rewriting and updating lab manuals.
  • Help students with Microsoft Office and statistical analysis software
  • Inventory control: order and purchase supplies and equipment, trouble shoot problems with products received, and ensure equipment is in proper working order.
  • Ensure OSHA standards are upheld in the lab and label all secondary containers with the contents, concentrations, and make sure appropriate hazard labels are attached
  • Supervise and train work study students.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in a science field; master's preferred.
  • 13 semester hours (20 quarter hours) of GIS course work

Experience

Minimum of two years experience in teaching; experience in laboratory instruction, set-up, and safety standards preferred
  • Experience in teaching GIS preferred.
  • Experience in working in both the laboratory and field preferred.
  • Proficiency at using ArcPro, Microsoft Office, and statistical software

Job Complexity:
  • Work performed includes complex tasks covered by broad practices or procedures. Considerable judgment and independent decision making required.
  • Position reports to department chair.

Work is performed in a classroom, laboratory, and field environment. Lift up to 50 pounds. Constant talking, hearing, seeing. Frequent standing, walking, lifting, use of computer, repetitive wrist, hand, and finger movement, climbing stairs, and traversing rough terrain in the field while on and off trail. Occasional use of body for pushing, pulling, reaching overhead, carrying or moving objects. Exposure to hazardous chemicals.
