Viterbo University College of Engineering, Letters, and Sciences invites applications for a full-time (9 month) tenure-track assistant professor in Microbiology beginning August 2021. Full benefits are included with this appointment. Primary teaching responsibilities include introductory and advanced undergraduate lecture and laboratory courses in microbiology and cellular/molecular biology for health science and natural science majors.

Responsibilities:
  • Teach 12 credits per semester of sophomore-level Microbiology lecture and laboratory to nursing students, and advanced General Microbiology lecture and laboratory to science and pre-health professional students.
  • Teaching courses based on departmental needs that may include genetics lab, biochemistry lab, medically related micro/molecular biology courses.
  • Maintain an active scholarship practice.
  • Serve as an academic advisor to students majoring in biology and related majors.
  • Demonstrate a student-centered approach in advising and teaching undergraduate students.
  • Participate in department, University, and community service.

Minimum Qualifications: PhD in Microbiology or related area.

Preferred Qualifications: Applicants with previous experience teaching college biology preferred. Favorable consideration will be given to candidates who are qualified to teach laboratory courses in genetics and/or biochemistry. Strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and scholarship appropriate to a tenure-track position.

Rank and Salary: Appointment is at the rank of Assistant Professor with a nine-month academic year appointment beginning August of 2021. Salary is competitive with other private institutions of similar size, mission, and educational philosophy.

Responsibilities: The primary teaching assignment includes undergraduate lecture and laboratory courses in microbiology to pre-health students, science majors and nursing students. Other responsibilities include teaching upper-level courses to pre-health professional students related to microbiology, genetics, and/or biochemistry. The successful candidate will continue with the active learning teaching strategies supported by the department in collaboration with biology faculty. Biomedical training and experience with health professions is desired. Viterbo University has a strong undergraduate research program in the Natural Sciences and seeks a candidate with the ability to guide and mentor students in affordable research and a sustainable research program. The successful candidate will maintain a scholarly habit and advise and recruit students pursing pre-health and biology degrees.
