We are seeking an individual to join our team as the Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager with a strong technical background. The Manager of EHS will be responsible for enhancing the safety culture at Novavax and will be accountable for development, support, deployment, monitoring and review of standards and management systems for all EHS matters in the company. This position will manage a wide range of EHS responsibilities to help drive high-impact improvements to EHS program elements. This position will also manage several EHS Specialists. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge developing and implementing practical programs and systems to comply with federal, state, and local EHS regulations, strategies, initiatives, and goals. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have a hands-on leadership style and be capable of driving change and influencing others. Also, this position will provide quality, timely and professional subject matter expertise and business support to ensure that a safe, sustainable, efficient, and legally compliant work environment is established at all times. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated individual with experience and interest in working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment who can work effectively in a dynamic atmosphere.

This person will report to the Associate Director, Environmental, Health & Safety .

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Develop, support, and monitor by:
  • Manage the development and deployment of HSE programs and systems to ensure compliance with company and legislative obligations.
  • Provide direction to our personnel to ensure operations are sustainable and comply with company EHS standards, as well as local, state, and federal requirements.
  • Key Responsibilities: collaborate with the Associate Director, EHS and interact with business and functional leaders to drive a culture of safety throughout the organization where all employees are held to the highest standard of safety as a core value.
  • In consultation with appropriate stakeholder groups, direct the design, development, deployment, monitoring & review of EHS systems, processes, and programs.
  • Assess EHS risk potential of existing operations and new business opportunities.
  • Perform the creation, revision, and implementation of EHS procedures to improve policies and standards as well as track performance.
  • Ensure the organization actively manages EHS regulatory requirements and promotes a proactive approach to risk mitigation.
  • Assist in establishing and monitoring EHS objectives, metrics, targets are aligned with company goals and objectives. Assist in identifying and supporting actions necessary to ensure goals and objectives are achieved.
  • Ensure all permits, registrations, and associated documents maintained to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Support continuous improvement activities and maintain EHS related KPIs; responsible for tracking metrics within balanced scorecard.
  • Oversee EHS training needs, help to develop when needed, organize and/or conduct training to meet compliance requirements.
  • Participate, manage, and provide support for Safety Committee(s).
  • Partner with HR to support workers compensation claims to the insurer and ensure effective claims management; provide guidance on effective return to work strategies.
  • Assist in emergency planning and response activities.
  • Enhance and drive the culture by being present in our field locations, setting an example by modeling the required behaviors, and hold other employees and peers accountable for their actions by identifying and acting on behavior which is inconsistent with company standards.
  • Domestic and international travel may be required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Bachelor's degree in EHS or related field.
  • Minimum 10 years progressive experience in EHS, preferably in biotech/pharma industries.
  • Solid hands-on knowledge of EHS best industry practices and procedures.
  • Exceptional communication skills, oral and in writing, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with others.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to make recommendations to effectively resolve issues and utilize good judgment. Interaction with employees and being solutions-minded in planning, directing, and completing assignments.
  • Demonstrable success in directing/managing HSSE Systems and teams Subject Matter Expertise in HSE Systems, OHS compliance strategies, and relevant state regulations.
  • Well versed in OSHA legislation and regulations.
  • Well-developed research and report writing skills.
  • Ability to implement and enforce systems and best practices, manage projects and conflicting priorities.
  • Planning, organizing and time management skills to effectively establish the priority and scheduling of work tasks and projects to ensure work priorities are completed on time and within budget.
  • Conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving skills to enable the identification of issues and the judgment to determine appropriate courses of action for achieving long-range organizational goals.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks during operational transitions and/or pivots.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft, Outlook, and data management systems.
  • GLP, cGMP experience.
  • Experience in developing and implementing EHS Management systems is a plus.
  • Understanding Human Performance concepts and experience in implementation is a plus.
  • Extensive working knowledge of regulations and requirements.
