In this vital role you will be responsible for hands-on cell line generation, expression optimization and protein production work using various mammalian expression systems. Amgen's Therapeutic Discovery organization is seeking a motivated and collaborative protein expression and cell culture expert to join the Protein Technologies group at our Amgen South San Francisco site. Protein Technologies group is responsible for designing and producing key enabling recombinant proteins to support early discovery programs and exploring cutting-edge novel protein modalities. Scientific and technical expertise in transient and stable protein expression platforms is required for this laboratory position.
Responsibilities include: understanding individual project details by literature reading and by closely working with protein design, molecular cloning, and protein purification groups, expressing recombinant constructs using mammalian cell hosts, carrying out cell biological characterization of transfected cells using IF microscopy or flow cytometry, performing small (~1-L) to mid-scale (~30-L) protein production runs using various platforms, analyzing harvested culture media by SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, Octet, etc. to determine secretory titer and protein product quality, summarizing and reporting experimental results, resolving protein expression challenges by cross-functional collaboration, following data entry and record keeping requirements, contributing to technology development initiatives through hands-on technical expertise.

Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology or a related subject area and 5 years of scientific laboratory experience.
Or
Master's Degree in a related subject area and 3 years of laboratory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Doctoral degree and a prior experience in recombinant protein production using mammalian expression systems in biotech/pharma industry.
A demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems and to work both independently and in cross-functional teams.
Solid hands-on experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Cell line and cell phenotype engineering using 293 and CHO cells.
- Producing complex secretory molecules such as bi-specific and multi-specific antibodies.
- Robotic liquid handling (e.g. TECAN) and high-throughput protein expression platform.
- Operating and maintaining bioreactors at 5-10L scale with disposable vessels.
Familiarity in the process of intracellular protein folding, assembly, trafficking, and protein secretion.
Effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work in a fast-paced team environment.
