We have an exciting opportunity for a Manager within the Biology R&D team based in Boulder, CO. In this role you will be responsible for management of a team of R&D scientists dedicated to providing continued innovation for Horizon, particularly in the areas of gene editing, base editing and gene modulation, developing new products, and generating novel IP. You will support the larger R&D team's objectives and work cross-functionally within Research Operations and across multiple departments to meet the long-term strategy of the business units and ensure sustainability and growth of the business.

The successful candidate will have practical experience in gene editing and gene modulation, strong molecular biology and cell biology skills, dedicated customer focus, and a demonstrable level of management experience. The expectation is that ~30% of this role will be laboratory based.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a team of junior and senior scientists on different R&D projects, coordinate priorities and meet timelines. Work seamlessly with the Director Biology R&D and other R&D Managers to manage resources needed to achieve specific goals for the team and the business.
  • Collaborate across different departments, communicate in a clear and effective way, and provide information to the commercial organization for successful product launches and post-launch support.
  • Drive productivity by empowering employees: monitor progress, assign resources, set clear objectives and priorities. Support and encourage professional development and mentor growth.
  • Cultivate and foster a culture of cohesive teamwork, transparency, and efficiency.
  • Promote innovative solutions and develop and commercialize new products and technologies.
  • Document experimental plans and results in accordance with product development and company's quality management system guidelines.

Essential Competencies & Requirements
  • PhD degree or corresponding experience in a relevant scientific discipline (Life Sciences, Biotechnology, etc.) with at least 5 years postgraduate work and experience in Biotech industry.
  • At least 2 years experience in managing teams of scientists, both junior and senior levels. Proven track record of strong management skills including managing through change, performance management, conflict resolution and development planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, understand priorities and meet established deadlines.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environment in teams of diverse scientists, with excellent organizational skills and with demonstrated flexibility and adaptability that facilitate team building.
  • Highly motivated, detail-oriented with a proven ability to think innovatively toward solving problems effectively and efficiently.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills, both written and verbal

Desirable Competencies & Requirements
  • Practical experience with one or more gene engineering and gene modulation technologies (CRISPR gene editing, Base editing, Lentivirus, rAAV, recombinases, RNAi or CRISPR-mediated gene modulation)
  • Experience in iPSC, T-cell, or other primary cell systems.
  • Experience in assay development, high content analysis, gene regulation or gene knockout screenings is highly desirable.

Compensation range

$115,000 - 130,000
