Job Summary
Job Summary
This position exists to provide analytical support to the Organic Chemistry Unit. The principle responsibility is to analyze environmental samples using techniques and instrumentation appropriate for organic chemistry analysis, and to provide analytical results to clientele so that potentially hazardous situations are detected, monitored and corrected in order to ensure and protect the public health and quality of the environment.
This position will follow established procedures as well as contribute to developing and writing new ones. Chemical analysis platforms include gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, gas chromatography-electron capture detection, and high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Biology, Microbiology, Ecology, or other related sciences.
And
One year professional experience conducting laboratory analyses in an analytical or research program relating to Environmental or Organic Chemistry, including one year experience with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.
All applicants must have the following additional experience to be considered:
  • Experience maintaining laboratory equipment including maintenance and repair.
  • Experience with Analytical Chemistry techniques including method development or validation and instrument or method troubleshooting.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A Master's Degree in Chemistry, Evnironmental Science, Biology, Microbiology, Ecology, or related science.
  • Experience working in a regulated laboratory environment (USEPA or ISO 17025 accredited).
  • Experience working with sophisticated instruments such as gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, and purge-and-trap extraction instruments.
  • Technical skills in the preparation of environmental samples, reagents, and references for common, standardized methods.
  • Experience following quality control procedures and protocol to ensure accuracy of tests using documented procedures.
  • Knowledge of the health effects and toxicity of environmental contaminants.
  • A minimum of 16 semester/24 quarter post-secondary credits in Chemistry including 8 semester/12 quarter post-secondary credits of Organic Chemistry and/or Biochemistry. Advanced courses taken such as Analytical Chemistry are also preferred.
  • Experience in the application of the chemical theories and principles used in the analytical procedures performed in the laboratory.
