Job Description
The Environmental Specialist will be responsible for: implementing and maintaining programs for environmental protection and compliance; act as a liaison with local, state, and federal environmental agencies; inspection and oversight of Best Management Practices; participating in emergency planning activities; integrating environmental programs in the production environment; and training of employees and subcontractors. Develops and implements programs to ensure that environmental regulatory obligations are fulfilled in a cost-effective manner and that environmental risks are effectively managed. Prepares related reports and studies for submission to regulatory agencies. The job has an emphasis in Title V and Federally Enforceable District Originated Permits, but will also include Emergency Planning and Right to Know Act (EPCRA) Chemical Inventory (Tier II) and Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) reporting and National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAPs) compliance monitoring. Some project management responsibilities required, primarily focusing on coordinating and leading projects. Other duties and job responsibilities as assigned.
Key Responsibilities:
- Coordinate environmental functions and standards, including required environmental records, reports, and permit applications (e.g.: Tier II, TRI, applicable NESHAPs, Hazardous Air Pollutant (HAPs), etc.) to BAE Systems Inc. and all applicable local, state, and federal regulatory authorities
- Provides technical assistance to the operation and maintenance of permitted sources and pollution control equipment.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of federal, state, and local legislation/regulations, and informs management of impact on operations.
- Track preventative maintenance records and other required obligations to meet local jurisdiction compliance permits
- Assist with the on-going management of the SHE ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
- Review plans and specifications for construction of new machinery or equipment in order to determine if safety health and environmental includes requirements to meet regulations.
- Work with line management to investigate environmental incidents. Perform a team approach to Root Cause Analysis in determining causes and preventive measures.
- Gain knowledge and work with BAE Systems computer based program for managing Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
- Exact duties will be determined based on the experience of the candidate selected.
Required Education, Experience, & Skills
- Bachelor's degree in environmental, safety or equivalent field and 4 years of experience
- Previous experience with EPA regulations and air permitting a must
- Thorough knowledge of EHS regulations and modern EHS management principles
- Ability to communicate complex information effectively with employees and all levels of site management (written and verbal)
- Ability to work in a team environment and take initiative individually
- Ability to coach/consult with line management at all levels relative to building a culture and processes that lead to excellent SHE performance
- Exceptional organizational skills
- Experience facilitating meetings and working groups
- Possess basic knowledge of Environmental and Safety Management System (ISO 14001 & OHSAS45001)
- Work proficiently with Microsoft Office
Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
- 4 or more years of environmental experience in a manufacturing, industrial, regulatory or consulting company.
- Knowledge of engineering, chemical, physical and biological sciences
- Professional Engineering license
- CHMM certification
- Experience in a union environment
- Experience with or basic knowledge of plating operations
