PENDING RECLASSIFICATION

This position within FWRI's Fish and Wildlife Health subsection will be the lead veterinarian for the avian, herp, and aquatic health research and response. The position can be located in either Gainesville or St. Petersburg.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Investigates health problems in avian, herp, and marine and freshwater aquatic resources including fish and invertebrates. Coordinates FWC surveillance focused on important diseases and parasites. Assists with disease event response, mitigation, or management and seeks to prevent disease outbreaks. Develops, implements, and coordinates research projects to resolve state-wide priority avian, herp, and aquatic health issues. Develops cooperative research programs with other governmental agencies, universities, and private entities. Integrates avian/herp/aquatic health research, disease investigations, response, and prevention with FWH subsection, EAR section, FWRI, and agency priorities.

Assists with development of an agency fish and wildlife disease surveillance and response program. Represents Florida and the FWC on wildlife and aquatic disease-related matters at public meetings, technical meetings, conferences, and workshops, and on scientific and management resource health committees as assigned. Provides expertise and veterinary technical assistance to FWC biologists, other agencies and organizations, and the public including wildlife capture and immobilization, forensic necropsy, veterinary procedures, and humane euthanasia.

Develops long-term plans and projects/proposals to address priority information gaps. Prepares timely reports and manuscripts for scientific publication on aspects of aquatic/wildlife diseases and mortality. Coordinates and reviews preparation of reports, manuscripts, and web articles by staff. Supervises FTE and OPS personnel, volunteers, and veterinary externs including recruitment, training, planning and directing work, review of employee performance, and ensuring compliance with FWRI rules, policies, and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must be licensed or be eligible for licensure as a Veterinarian by the State of Florida in accordance with Florida Statute 474 and must be eligible for DEA licensure. A strong background in avian, herp, and/or aquatic animal ecology and diseases with a degree in one of the physical or natural sciences and one years' experience in veterinary medicine and/or fish and wildlife ecology is required. A graduate degree in fish and wildlife health or ecology or related field may substitute for experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Knowledge of: principles, and techniques used in scientific research; veterinary diagnostics and medicine; animal diseases, their symptoms and treatment; animal anatomy, physiology and pathology; and management and supervisory principles, practices, and procedures. Skilled in: the necropsy of birds, herps, and aquatic animals; use of veterinary laboratory instruments and equipment; and in wildlife capture, immobilization, handling, and euthanasia. Ability to: plan and manage scientific research programs; determine work priorities; assign work effectively supervise people; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; conduct, analyze and interpret veterinary diagnostic tests; work independently; solve problems and make decisions; and understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to veterinary medicine. Ability to use computer word-processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, and geographic information system software packages. Ability to prepare scientific reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts, agency reports, white papers, and popular articles.

Licensure/registration/certification requirements (If applicable, list the appropriate Florida Statute or federal regulation cite):

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent and eligibility for Florida veterinary licensure, eligibility for DEA licensure. Valid driver's license.
