Job Description

Job Summary:

This Head of Microbial and Molecular Biology (MMB) is responsible for developing global strategy, planning, and evaluating projects in the field of virology and molecular biology and evaluate projects within Seqirus and external opportunities. He/she will manage key stakeholder relationships (e.g. CDC, BARDA, Crick Institute). The MMB Head will manage the Research MMB group with control of the MMB budget and be a member of the Research Leadership Team. This position will serve on cross-functional teams (e.g. CPTs) to provide scientific input on core projects and lead Research stage projects.

Major Responsibilities:

Develop detailed scientific strategy for research activities applying to both global cross-functional projects and local activities
  • Present plan at relevant forums to receive cross-functional approval where needed
  • Contribute to scientific evaluation of all Research projects
  • Support development projects through scientific contribution
  • Within Research contribute to Research Leadership Team group planning

Build and manage a world class Microbial and Molecular Biology group and oversee MMB budget
  • Oversee day to day activities
  • Plan experiments with team and analyzes results in context of overall project
  • Assure organization is compliant with policies and group continues development
  • Generate and support generation of IP for core projects

Evaluate external opportunities and design experimental plan as needed to demonstrate value
  • Identify opportunities by being an active member of the external scientific community
  • Review opportunities as provided to Research by other functions or external groups
  • Foster external partnerships through academic and industrial networks

Lead scientific interactions with external stakeholders to ensure world class scientific recognition and scientific support of internal programs
  • WHO CC, Essential regulatory lab, and SGVI interactions as needed
  • Support pandemic activities for BARDA and CDC with scientific input and leadership
  • Actively publish high quality publications
  • Interact with policy groups to provide science-based arguments to guide public policy



Minimum Qualifications:


  • PhD in Virology-relevant discipline preferred, Postgraduate degree (preferably PhD) and / or extensive experience in relevant industry or academic environment - scientific and people leadership
  • 10+ years' experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry (or where relevant a biomedical research organization).
  • Excellent reputation within targeted focus areas of research, virology especially influenza or other respiratory diseases
  • In-depth knowledge, experience and a track record in delivering research candidates into Development
  • Well established relationships into scientific and medical communities and the ability to sustain and develop professional networks
  • Strong leadership and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to develop constructive and effective relationships with direct reports, colleagues and senior management. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate research projects and targets to management, customers staff and external stakeholders
  • Experienced people leader with proven ability to develop talent and achieve results through teamwork and leadership of others, streamlined execution and innovation in a matrix business unit environment, particularly in a global business
  • Ability to create and drive change
  • Proven ability to lead and drive complex global research projects
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and to support cohesive short- and long-term R&D strategies to support the future growth of the company.
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate effectively, and ability to identify and engage internal and external expertise as required
