Job Description
The Department of Biology is accepting applications for an Assistant Professor position with a primary focus in Microbiology. The candidate should enjoy teaching above all other aspects of academia and must bring creative pedagogy to the classroom. She/he must also demonstrate ability to establish an effective research program within the context and resources of a small, liberal arts university and to engage students in that research.
This is a full time, tenure-track faculty position in Biology beginning in Fall 2021.

The Department of Biology is accepting applications for an Assistant Professor position with a primary focus in Microbiology. The candidate should enjoy teaching above all other aspects of academia and must bring creative pedagogy to the classroom. She/he must also demonstrate ability to establish an effective research program within the context and resources of a small, liberal arts university and to engage students in that research.
This is a full time, tenure-track faculty position in Biology beginning in Fall 2021.
The successful applicant will:
- Teach 12 contact hours in both fall and spring semesters (typically two lectures and two labs per semester) in our newly renovated laboratory facilities. This includes
- Teaching multiple courses across the undergraduate biology curriculum, including a 200 level microbiology course serving both biology and nursing majors. Developing and teaching an advanced microbiology course. Candidate will have the opportunity to develop and teach upper level electives in his or her area of expertise.
- Teaching at least some evening or weekend sections and contributing to general education science courses and team taught courses as needed.
- Be expected to establish and maintain a scholarly research program that provides research opportunities for students, to write grants, present at conferences and publish in peer reviewed journals within their field.
- Mentor and advise students
- Regularly participate in course and program assessment, and make improvements in teaching as needed.
- Other duties include, but are not limited to attending university, school, and department meetings, participation in recruitment and retention events and service on department, school, and university level committees.
Requirements:
- Ph.D. degree in Microbiology or equivalent field. Background in medically-related microbiology is desirable.
- Demonstrated successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level and/or evidence of potential for teaching excellence
- Demonstrated evidence of research activity and scholarship and ability to establish an effective research program within the context and resources of a small, liberal arts university.
- Experience assessing learning outcomes in courses and programs.
- Experience using a learning management system, such as Blackboard Learn, as well as proficient use of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Familiarity with distance learning is desirable.
- Strong interpersonal skills to interact with students, administration, and peers. Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in the English language
- Willingness to support the mission of the University.
