The Program Associate of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Verification Program, is a key member of the team who carries out a variety of auditing, client support, and operations tasks related to carbon offset verification, primarily for the non-forestry portion of the GHG Verification Program. Carbon offset project types include agriculture, landfill, ozone depleting substances (ODS), livestock, electric vehicles, industrial processes, campus sustainability, and others.

The SCS GHG Verification Program is a leader in the field of carbon offset verification, having verified close to 300 million tonnes of CO2-e since 2008. It is the recipient of the Best Verification Company reward as recently as 2018.

Areas of responsibility include auditing and verification, coordination and operations, program quality, and assistance in business development. At the direction of the GHG Program Manager, and in conjunction with the GHG Program Director, the GHG Program Associate will work to support forestry and non-forestry related activities of the Greenhouse Gas Verification Program and assist with other responsibilities, as needed. For the right candidate and commensurate with background and goals, the opportunity to explore growth opportunities and advancement into other roles will be provided.

Roles and Responsibilities

Technical Services
  • Conduct data analysis and GHG verification
  • Prepare and submit verification/audit reports within established timelines
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of applicable regulations and standards; ensure adherence to quality requirements and code of conduct standards
  • Participate in development and implementation of consulting projects relevant to this position

Client Support
  • Engage with clients, client prospects, and networks
  • Assist with outreach and marketing to new clients and for development of new business areas
  • Supporting clients to scope projects, gather data, etc.
  • Assist with preparation of proposals and project budgets
  • Respond to client questions and concerns and document communications
  • Ensure clients are informed about the verification and process and relevant requirements
  • Address client concerns in a timely fashion while keeping the manager abreast of any issues

Manage Verification Process
  • Track and report on verification status, ensure benchmarks are meeting established deadlines
  • Communicate with technical staff to ensure timely service delivery
  • Prepare and maintain verification related documentation
  • Track and allocate audit budget and expenses

Program Quality
  • Ensure program compliance with program quality system and relevant GHG schemes
  • Ensure consistent interpretation and application of standards
  • Support staff during the internal audit process
  • Assist in the investigation of complaints involving accreditation body
  • Adhere to and enforce all quality and code of conduct standards

Administrative Support
  • Generate invoices and track payments
  • Maintain electronic and paper files
  • Ensure audit documentation (e.g., work orders, contracts, and reports) is properly executed and maintained
  • Assist in the creation and/or maintenance of program documents


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in relevant scientific field such as engineering, environmental science, chemistry
  • 2 years professional experience requiring quantitative work and technical report writing, or 1 year of professional experience plus a graduate degree (e.g., Masters or PhD degree in scientific field such as engineering, environmental science, chemistry
  • Ability to work independently or in team-oriented situation in our Emeryville headquarters office or from remote office location
  • Very strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize numerous tasks effectively to meet deadlines
  • Ability to learn quickly or adapt to a rapidly changing environment.
  • Professional demeanor in all forms of communication.
  • Accuracy, attention to detail, and ability to proof your own work.
  • Fluency in Word, Excel, Outlook, and FileMaker Pro required, with proficiency in other programs and database management systems preferred
  • Ability to handle complex and varied tasks, while working independently
  • Ability to complete time-sensitive projects and meet realistic deadlines
