What You Will Do
You will work as an Environmental Professional for the Waste Management Programs Group supporting Los Alamos National Laboratory's waste management regulatory compliance and reporting operations. The Waste Compliance and Reporting team provides oversight for compliance with Department of Energy Order 435.1 Radioactive Waste Management and Laboratory Waste Management policy. The organization provides waste management compliance support and oversight for waste characterization, staging, storing, shipping and disposal activities and conducts facility-specific container inventories against the institutional waste operating record in the laboratory's Waste Compliance and Tracking System. You will work closely with other members of the team providing customer support to facility managers, Waste Management Coordinators, internal/external stakeholders, and waste generators. You will prepare deliverables and commitments to the Environmental Protection Agency, New Mexico Environment Department, Department of Energy, and Department of Transportation in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Reporting to the Team Leader, your day-to-day work will include understanding and communicating regulations to customers pertaining to radioactive waste management, reviewing waste data, preparing waste data reports and metrics, and communicating and interacting with customers across organizations and external regulators. Working across organizations and teams, you will verify waste compliance data, work processes, and waste requirements. You will serve as the technical lead for the Radioactive Waste Management Basis (RWMB) and provide management oversight to the Department of Energy Order 435.1 RWMB program for radioactive waste facility approvals and processing one-year storage extensions for waste containers exceeding a year throughout the laboratory. You manage the RWMB facility approvals with the Department of Energy to include managing, writing, developing correspondence, procedures, and polices related to DOE O 435.1 RWMB.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Advanced knowledge and experience with DOE O 435.1 Radioactive Waste Management, Resource Conservation Recovery Act and Hazardous Waste requirements.
- Advanced knowledge of and/or experience handling, characterizing, packaging, and/or transporting solid, liquid, hazardous, radioactive, and/or mixed wastes including lab-packing.
- Advanced knowledge conducting waste inspections and/or waste inventories at nuclear and non-nuclear facilities.
- Understand and interprets waste data using systems to manage waste cradle-to-grave and ability to generate and present environmental protection reports, correspondence, policies and procedures.
- Proven success with teamwork, customer service, consultation and communication to implement sound environmental practices.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with waste-related field/facility operations including shipping activities.
- Strong communication, writing, and presenting skills including the ability to author and present technical documents, and generate regulatory deliverables.
- Experience and proficiency using EXCEL data spreadsheets and tables.
Education/Experience: Position typically requires a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field and eight years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post-graduate coursework may be desirable.

Location: This position will be part of the Laboratory's Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. The Telework Pilot is in effect from Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2021, but may be shortened or extended at the manager's discretion. Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
