The Lilly Diabetes and Complications Therapeutic Area (DCTA) is focused on discovery and development of new therapeutics for the treatment of medical complications arising from type 2 diabetes. The DCTA is looking for a biology apprentice to conduct experiments using biochemistry, molecular biology and/or cell biology techniques. The apprentice should have completed course work in biology, cell physiology, biochemistry or molecular biology and have enthusiasm for applying the scientific method to make discoveries to help patients with type 2 diabetes. The candidate is expected to work in a team-oriented environment and to support multiple teams in the DCTA with their expertise as needed.
The Lilly Professional Apprenticeship Program is a 12-month intensive fixed duration (FDE) professional development program during which the apprentice receives a combination of formal training, on-the-job learning, and mentoring in a key functional area to be equipped to compete for a Lilly position after successful completion of the apprenticeship.
Responsibilities
- Learn skills to read,interpret, and apply knowledge gained fromscientific publications related to planned research projects
- Learn the principles of experimental designin partnership with laboratory experts
- Critically evaluate datathat are generated from experimentation
- Trouble-shootproblems in collaboration with other scientists when problems arise
- Perform cell culturing and molecular biology/biochemistry techniquesto support drug discovery
- Maintainaccurate record keeping,conductdata analysis, and reportdata in written and oral formats
- Conductwork in full compliance with Lilly Research Policies, and complete all required training activities in the timeframe specified
- Demonstratepro-activeandflexiblebehaviors anddevelop skills for competency inconductingindependentresearch projects
Basic Qualifications
- HS Diploma or Equivalent and 3 or more years of related or professional experience. Proven experience with Microsoft Office Products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States. Lilly does not anticipate providing sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B or TN status) for this employment position?
Additional Skills/Preferences
- Experience in developing,conducting,and evaluating data fromin vitroexperiments,such asfunctionaltestsin cells, ELISAs, SDS-PAGE gels, PCR,and/orwestern blotting
- Experience and willingness to work withanimal tissues, cultured cells,chemicals, andmolecular tools such as DNA
- At least 1 year of college and/or associate degree in a related field.
- Experience,knowledgeand desire to work in STEM
- Excellent interpersonal and networking skills
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work well in a team environment
- Positive attitude
- Strong organizing/multi-tasking skills and attention to detail
- Learning agility and self-management skills
