Responsibilities

As the Deputy Regional Director within the Northeast Region, some of your specific duties will include:
  • Shares responsibility with the Regional Director for planning, directing and evaluating all science and operational activities in the science centers with the geographic area and in collaboration with the Regional Director, develops regional plans and implements policies and procedures.
  • Provides advice and information to the Regional Director on matters related to policy and program development, budget formulation, and emerging national and regional issues; identifies programmatic opportunities and regional needs; works with Bureau and Regional managers to ensure that regional science priorities are translated to operational science plans.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with the Associate Directors and Program Coordinators to effectively implement and manage science programs, to coordinate and implement programs, and to participate on strategic planning initiatives affecting the geographic area.
  • Exercises a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over the employees assigned to the Regional Director and gives positive direction in implementing the organization's EEO commitment to fairness in the selection and treatment of employees; and fosters the development of employee skills to ensure that science centers are prepared to meet current and future responsibilities.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR BIOLOGIST, GS-0401: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels.

A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. BASIC
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR HYDROLOGIST, GS-1315: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Hydrologist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics.

B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR GEOLOGIST, GS-1350: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geologist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in geology. In addition to the geology course work included in the degree, it must also have included or been supplemented by 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in geology plus 20 additional semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-15 :


In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience that is equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal service.

Examples of GS-14 level work may include: Investigations that involved highly unstructured problems involving both difficult technology and complex human relations or programmatic issues. The results of these investigations had significant effects over a wide region of the United States or may have included responsibility for new technology especially critical to the organization's programs. This work involved other recognized senior technical experts asking the scientist for advice or counsel due to his/her personal reputation in the field.
