About the Role

Running Tide is looking to hire an experienced and exceptionally self-motivated macroalgae scientist to help conduct a series of research projects aimed at further scaling Running Tide's macroalgae culture systems. The Head of Macroalgae Development will work closely with Running Tide's existing R&D team to identify and execute innovative solutions to bottlenecks that may constrain the kelp culture industry. This person should have a background in macroalgae aquaculture and be ready to put that expertise to work in the field.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute Running Tide's kelp broodstock operations
  • Draw upon internal and external research to develop innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools and frameworks to address macroalgae farming challenges
  • Provide inputs for the design and build of efficient growing systems
  • Own all operations of growing systems, including cleaning and routine maintenance as needed
  • Diligently and consistently collect and analyze data, including routine tissue sampling
  • Collaborate with engineering teams in order to develop novel technologies aimed at improving the productivity, efficiency, and safety of Running Tide's kelp growing systems
  • Provide aquaculture expertise and be a key member of our kelp experiments
What We're Looking For
  • Degree in Marine Ecology, Aquaculture, Botany, Biology, or a closely related field
  • Accomplished in all lab tasks including microscopy, algae sporulation, water quality maintenance, maintaining biosecurity, etc.
  • A proven track record in macroalgae aquaculture
  • Well-versed in long-term data analysis and applying the scientific method to problem solving
  • Experience managing multiple complex projects, including managing finances and coordinating the work of other professionals and partners
  • Well-developed time management skills and multi-tasking abilities
  • Ability to use and operate basic computer software
  • Ability to work independently and can direct and motivate a team
  • A drive to constantly improve upon potentially repetitive tasks through innovation
  • Willingness to roll up your sleeves and be a part of the solution
  • Flexible, adaptive attitude with willingness to iterate systems quickly on short notice
Preferred Qualifications
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Marine Ecology, Aquaculture, Botany, Biology, or a closely related field
  • Research cruise experience
  • Experience with setup, deployment, calibration, and analysis of water chemistry instrumentation such as ISEs and multi-parameter sondes
  • A record of scientific publications
  • Advanced skills in data analysis, statistics, scientific coding/programming, and other quantitative methods
