WSP, is seeking an Associate Environmental Scientist for our North Florida region (Tallahassee or Eastpoint, FL preferred). This position will support a variety of environmental projects located primarily in the Gulf Coast region within our growing coastal restoration and sustainability practice area. Our successful candidate will be an experienced professional with a background in Environmental Science, Biology, Marine Science, Coastal Engineering, or related discipline.

Duties may include coastal habitat restoration/monitoring, resiliency planning, stakeholder engagement/facilitation, grant proposals/management, management of project teams/budgets/schedules, and public speaking/presentations. This individual will likely also assist with site assessment and remediation activities (e.g., surface water, soil, groundwater, sediment, sampling etc.) in support of our statewide site assessment and remediation contract and serve as a second staff member on natural resources management teams conducting biological fieldwork for a variety of development projects. Candidates must have a willingness and interest in learning about and supporting a variety of environmental projects in multiple habitat types and have excellent communication and organization skills to effectively coordinate with various internal management teams and support client needs.

We are seeking an individual with the following attributes:

Excellent communication skills and the ability to focus creative energies on successful project implementation;
Experience with collecting field data and summarizing results;
A sincere interest in promoting the use of natural and nature-based solutions ("green infrastructure") when working on coastal restoration and watershed restoration projects; and The ability to monitor and document construction activities performed by outside contractors in coastal environments.

Responsibilities:


  • Self-manage workload to meet multiple project deliverable deadlines.

  • Work efficiently with WSP Project Directors, Project Managers, and other technical staff to support a variety of environmental projects, including coastal restoration/resiliency projects, hazardous waste assessment-remediation, biological fieldwork support and other projects, as needed.

  • Conduct environmental sampling and restoration activities.

  • Coordinate/oversee collection, analysis, and reporting of environmental monitoring/survey data.

  • Assist with the preparation of field notes, memos, meeting summaries, reports, proposals, and other deliverables.

  • Analyze coastal conditions and assist with planning/design/permitting of various coastal and marine habitat restoration projects, with a focus on coastal protection/resiliency.

  • Assist in developing and implementing creative solutions for coastal restoration/resiliency projects/programs.

  • Support various other projects, as needed, to achieve client goals and company success.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science, Natural Science, Coastal Engineering, or related discipline. A master's degree in any of the indicated fields and/or 40-hour OSHA HAZWWOPER certification are considered plusses

  • 1 - 3 years professional experience with an education background in Environmental Science, Biology, Marine Science, Coastal Engineering, or related discipline

  • Highly motivated with strong interpersonal and verbal communication and analytical and technical writing skills

  • Ability to work long days in remote coastal areas that are accessible only by boat

  • Good swimming skills and the ability to pass WSP's snorkeling skills test

  • Ability to drive a full-size pickup or van with attached trailer

  • Ability to stay focused to meet task and project goals, multi-task, adhere to schedules, and work independently and as part of a team

  • Strong willingness to learn and take initiative, as well as be mentored

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, analytical, and data interpretation skills with attention to detail and an aptitude to conduct high quality of work in a fast-paced environment

  • Must be flexible to a variety of schedules to meet business needs and able to quickly adapt to change

  • Strong computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

  • Occasional travel domestically and/or work at client locations to support business needs (approximately 10-30%). If overseeing a large construction project, a TDY or extended travel may be required during that timeframe.

  • SCUBA diving certification, experience operating a boat, and FAA Part 107 Unmanned Pilot Certification are all considered plusses

  • Valid driver's license and clear driving record with ability to travel to meetings and project site(s)

  • Ability to walk for several miles, while carrying up to 40 lbs. and work in extreme temperatures associated with the southeastern US

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies

  • Must successfully complete and pass WSP's Motor Vehicle screening.
