*Essential Job Duties:*The Department of Applied Ecology is seeking candidates for one (1) Postdoctoral Research Scholar position in quantitative disease ecology, focused on testing fundamental assumptions in mathematical models of parasite transmission.
This Quantitative Disease Ecology Postdoctoral Research Scholar position is available in the Department of Applied Ecology at North Carolina State University, in the Sustainable Health Ecology Lab (PI = Dr. Skylar Hopkins). The Postdoctoral Scholar will investigate fundamental assumptions in ecological epidemiological models, exploring how relaxing or complicating these assumptions affects disease dynamics and control efficacy. For example, how does nonrandom foraging behavior influence host contact rates and thus disease transmission? And how do nonlinear contact rate functions influence parasite invasion thresholds? These questions will mostly be explored in a general theoretical context, but the Postdoctoral Scholar will also use extensive existing data in a snail-symbiont system to validate models. The primary responsibilities of the Postdoctoral Scholar will include (1) adapting classic SIR models and performing analytical and numerical analyses of their behavior; (2) validating models by statistically comparing their predictions to existing field and laboratory data; and (3) publishing and presenting scientific results in collaboration with others.
Depending on their interests, the Postdoctoral Scholar will also have opportunities to collaboratively write grants for future funding; mentor graduate and undergraduate students; learn new quantitative skills (e.g., agent-based modeling using NetLogo); and participate in ongoing field and laboratory studies, such as dissecting salvaged road killed snakes for parasites or running aquatic mesocosm experiments.
A start date in August 2021 is preferred, but the start date is flexible. *The position will be full-time and initially for one year, with opportunity for renewal for one or more additional years dependent on satisfactory progress and funding availability.*
