Position Overview

Under general direction, develops, directs and coordinates the KML Laboratories quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) program for staff involved in analyzing customer samples. Develops and coordinates special programs and projects related to quality control; reviews laboratory practices and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance with quality assurance and safety standards; performs related work as required.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

· Establishes, coordinates, and monitors the laboratory quality assurance program; works closely with supervisors to plan, schedule, and implement QA related activities.
· Plans, develops and implements quality assurance programs for staff and laboratory personnel.
· Prepares routing and special reports to staff and regulatory agencies as required; prepares report of analytical results to customers.
· Develops and presents training program for laboratory staff; develops training protocols, competency standards, and documentation requirements.
· Coordinates or performs quality assurance system audits of laboratory performance; prepares or reviews the preparation of calibration standards and quality assurance check samples for internal laboratory use.
· Monitors and maintains the laboratory quality assurance database; develops, maintains, and reviews quality control charts; prepares or reviews the preparation of control limits, detection limits and action levels for laboratory analyses.
· Conducts training in the area of laboratory quality assurance.
· Confers with other KML employees, representatives of governmental and industrial organizations, and others on matters relating to laboratory quality assurance.
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education, Experience and Technical Skills

· Completion of four years of college, resulting in graduation or its equivalent, with major work in chemistry, microbiology, or closely related field.
· Three years of professional laboratory experience, two years of which must have been microbiological analysis with emphasis on laboratory quality assurance/quality control program management.

General Skills and/or Abilities

· Knowledge of principles and practice of laboratory quality assurance and quality control.
· Knowledge of computer based laboratory information management systems.
· Knowledge of data management processing techniques.
· Skill in performing standard quality assurance/quality control evaluation procedures.
· Skill in evaluating data using statistical methods for analysis.
· Skill in interpreting results of statistical analysis.
· Ability to make recommendations to management in developing and presenting a variety of training programs and preparing manuals and documentation.
· Ability to work with a variety of supervisors to plan, schedule, organize and coordinate the quality assurance program.
Knowledge of ISO 17025 programs

Language Skills

· Ability to develop and implement a coordinated applied program for laboratory quality assurance.
· Able to write clear and concise reports.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

· Work in a laboratory and business-office environment.
· Work 40+ hour work week.
· Must possess physical characteristics to perform essential function of the job.
· Must be willing to work evening and weekend hours as needed.
