The opportunity:
The Environmental Engineer is responsible for assisting the Environmental Manager to ensure that environmental compliance is maintained at a large, fully integrated Kraft pulp mill.
How you will impact WestRock:
- Manage day-to-day wastewater treatment plant operations and optimization.
- Manage wastewater treatment plant operators.
- Having a biological wastewater treatment "A" operator license or the ability to obtain an operator license.
- Knowledgeable in sampling, reporting and training associated with regulatory permits, primarily NPDES process wastewater, surface and groundwater, solid waste, SPCC and landfill.
- Assist with Title V permit programs.
- Work with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies to obtain and maintain permits with a focus on solid waste and water.
- Prepare a variety of regulatory reports which include data collection, calculations, accurate recordkeeping and an adherence to regulatory deadlines, such as: landfill, asbestos, groundwater and surface withdrawal, DMR, SPCC and SWPPP.
- Maintain required documents in a concise, thorough "audit-ready" manner.
- Establish, write and communicate programs and policies to comply with regulatory programs.
- Conduct training to both hourly and salaried personnel.
- Support operations in reviewing the environmental controls systems, including the air emissions CEMS.
- Interact with all Mill environmental programs such as: asbestos, hazardous waste, infectious waste, universal waste, wastewater discharge permitting, storm water runoff, solid waste, tanks, EPCRA, CERCLA, FRP, BMP, RICE and LDAR.
- Being a certified DOT/hazmat preparer/shipper
- Develop monthly, semi-annual and annual permit reports for review by the Environmental Manager
- Participate in the on-call weekend duty rotation, approximately every six weeks.
What you need to succeed:
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical or Environmental Engineering or Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science or other engineering or science degree
- 3-5 years of experience in environmental compliance at a manufacturing facility or as a consultant.
- Proficient computer skills (including MS Office, most importantly Excel and Microsoft Word)
