Sanford Burnham Prebys is a preeminent, independent biomedical research institute dedicated to understanding human biology and disease, and advancing scientific discoveries to profoundly impact human health.

Research in the Commisso lab (www.commissolab.com) is centered on elucidating the underlying mechanisms that drive metabolic stress tolerance in tumors. We are particularly interested in identifying metabolic adaptations and dependencies that contribute to tumor progression and can be targeted to develop novel therapeutic modalities for cancer.

A Staff Scientist position is available to study the role of metabolic stress in tumor cell fitness, chemoresistance or tumor-stroma interactions. Under limited direction, the Staff Scientist will plan and manage all aspects of a research project from research design to publication. The Staff Scientist will also oversee and train more junior scientists in the laboratory.

  • Data collection, analysis and interpretation
  • Data recording and compliance
  • Management of collaborations
  • Results summarization
  • Preparation of text and figures for grants and manuscripts
  • Training and oversight of junior scientists


Required Skills

Required Experience
  • Ph.D. in a biological science and four years post-Ph.D. biology research experience in an academic laboratory
  • Experience with culturing mammalian cells in vitro, mouse models of cancer, and fluorescent microscopy is required
  • Experience with cell viability assays, dose response assays or flow cytometry is preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct and publish research projects
  • Work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Be responsible and have strong time management skills
  • Able to analyze and resolve issues of high/moderate complexity
  • Possess strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Demonstrate professional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Professional proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator, Prism, ImageJ/Fiji
