The Safety Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing an engaging safety training program, educating staff at all levels on best practices, and creating performance metrics, and monitoring and evaluating progress. The ideal candidate is a self-starter with knowledge in various types of heavy equipment, experience in conducting safety and environmental risk assessments, and has an interest in sustainability. Responsible for promoting a safe work environment by analyzing accident trends, developing policies and training to reduce accidents and injuries. Also, responsible for investigating accidents and customer complaints regarding property damage.

Target Hiring Range: $45,219/yr - $56,160/yr

  • Serve as case manager for workplace injuries from point of incident through return to full duty. Determine probable causes by reviewing and recording accident scenes, interviewing witnesses and compiling reports.
  • Observe employees on the job for safe/unsafe activities and recommend discipline for continued unsafe behavior.
  • Research, administer and update the Debris Management Plan. Compliment safe behaviors. Provide suggestions on improving unsafe behaviors and council employees as needed.
  • Review, write and develop training and tailgate meetings material; conduct training as necessary.
  • Continuously evaluate department safety status and write needed safety policies and procedures.
  • Communicate with citizens to resolve problems and/or discuss property damage.
  • Plan, coordinate and chair weekly Safety Review Committee meeting to review accidents and injuries.
  • Establish and maintain a heightened awareness within the department of industry safety standards and accident prevention measures.
  • Field assessments during inclement weather for workforce safety and safe operation of equipment.
  • Oversee license review for EOI and EOII equipment operators (retention of Class B and Class A license status).
  • Schedule annual fire extinguisher inspections at all EWS facilities.
  • Ensure first aid kits and cabinets at all EWS facilities are available and stocked for use.
  • Collaborate with Risk Management to conduct random drug testing, identify important safety measures and communicate safety trends to the department.
  • Investigate property damage complaints and assist Field Services Manager with other field and administrative duties as needed.

    Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

    Education/ Experience:
    • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Safety Administration, Industrial Hygiene or related area of study
    • 3-5 years experience in safety administration or similar field

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
    • Extensive knowledge of current safety practices
    • Comprehensive knowledge on properly investigating accidents
    • Skill in Microsoft Office including Excel, Access, Outlook and Word
    • Skill writing procedures, policies and memos
    • Skill developing constructive training programs
    • Strong prioritization and presentation skills
    • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with managers, co-workers and citizens
    • Ability to make ad hoc decisions

     Certified Safety Professional preferred
     OSHA General Industry and Construction Certification preferred
     American Red Cross or other CPR Instructor Certification preferred
     DOT Workzone Instructor Certification preferred
     Defensive Driving or other driver safety instructor certification preferred
     Valid Class C Texas driver's license
     Texas Class B or Class A Driver's License preferred

    The incumbent works in a typical office environment; occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards. Frequent site visits and outside work required.
