Job Summary
The mission of the U.S. Geological Survey's Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (PWRC) is to excel in wildlife and natural resource science, providing the information, scientific understanding and technologies needed to support the sound management and conservation of the nation's biological resources. The Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (PWRC) requires a Science Technician I to perform laboratory and field work in support of research to understand the response of amphibian populations to environmental change. The Northeast Amphibian Research Monitoring Initiative (NE ARMI), the National Park Service and Fish and Wildlife Service have teamed together to initiate a region-wide study on the distribution of wetland- terrestrial- and stream associated amphibians. The data will be used as part of a large regional-scale study to assess population distribution and community trends in amphibians over space and time and examine relationships between the amphibian populations and environmental and habitat factors.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the government technical liaison and associated colleagues to provide scientific support for the collection and data entry of biological, physical, and chemical samples from amphibians and their habitats.
- Maintain scientific instrumentation, collect samples, and analyze samples.
- Transfer and store electronic data among computers and software programs to ensure appropriate redundancy.
- Conduct surveys of amphibians in terrestrial, stream and wetland habitats.
- Operate and maintain data loggers.
- Prepare and operate field and laboratory equipment to collect and analyze ecological samples and data.
- Data entry and summarize results from collected data and prepare informative graphics displaying the summaries.
- Transfer electronic data among software programs and organize data in spreadsheets.
- Prepare graphs and charts for scientific reports and presentations.
- Enter and maintain data in local databases.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree in ecology, wildlife, or a related field.
- At least 1 year of experience.
- Demonstrated experience in collecting amphibian population data.
- Demonstrated knowledge of terrestrial, stream and wetland amphibian communities.
- Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
