Essential Functions
Clinical Scientist I
Performance of analytical procedures:
- Performs a range of standard procedures in one or more of the clinical laboratory disciplines.
- Recognizes critical or significant findings.
- Operates instruments and other equipment following established procedures.
- Performs calibration, standardization and maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment.
- Performs simple trouble-shooting activities according to established guidelines.
- Disseminates laboratory test information in a timely manner.
- Utilizes the laboratory information system or other established systems to verify and document results.
Performance of quality management & performance improvement:
- Demonstrates behaviors that support performance improvement activities.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the principles and practices of quality management and performance improvement.
- Monitors accuracy and precision of laboratory tests personally performed.
- Adheres to quality control protocols to assure accuracy of results.
- Review new procedures and instructions as needed.
- Documents nonconforming events.
Education and training:
- Maintains competence and professional development.
- Maintains license, certification or registration as required.
- Actively participates in continuing education programs.
- Involved in education of student Clinical Laboratory Scientists and Medical Laboratory Technicians.
Clinical Care:
- Ensure that quality patient care is delivered to all patients on a 24-hour basis, and the section is maintained in accordance with professional and regulatory standards and the philosophy and goals of Hoag.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education, Training and Experience
Required:
Clinical Scientist I:
- Bachelor's degree in Biology or related science
- Zero to two (0-2) years of experience
Skills or Other Qualifications
Required:
- General and working knowledge of laboratory medicine and detailed knowledge of one or more of the following areas: transfusion medicine, microbiology, serology, chemistry, hematology, urinalysis and coagulation testing.
- Skilled in reading documents written in Standard English as well as scientific documents such as Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines.
- Skilled in writing technical reports.
- Skilled at speaking using appropriate vocabulary and grammar such to ensure information is obtained and policies and procedures are understood.
- Skilled in the use of fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions.
- Knowledge of the metric system.
- Word processing skill to prepare reports.
- Knowledge of where to go within the organization for information and ability to judge what information should be passed on to others including management.
- Good communication, customer service and teamwork skills.
Preferred:
- Laboratory Information Systems and Microsoft Office Applications.
- Information systems with emphasis on Microsoft applications
License and Certifications

- State of California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License or
- One of the following State of California Limited Clinical Laboratory Scientist License
- Clinical Chemist Scientist License (work limited to Chemistry only)
- Clinical Hematologist Scientist License (work limited to Hematology only)
- Clinical Immunohematologist Scientist License (work limited to Blood Bank only)
- Clinical Microbiologist Scientist License (work limited to Microbiology only)
- Public Health Microbiologist Certification (work limited to Microbiology only)
- Valid California License or Certification as required for scope of work in area of specialty or subspecialty
