Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) is seeking a full-time Environmental Scientist with 3+ years of direct environmental consulting experience for our Herndon or Richmond, VA office. Work will primarily include field investigations (wetland and stream delineations and assessments, compliance monitoring, and threatened and endangered species surveys) and natural resource permitting; however, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance documentation and design/build environmental compliance also may be included. The successful candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary team comprised of scientists, planners, and engineers focused on existing client support. The preferred candidate will enjoy a variety of working conditions ranging from field efforts to office analysis; report writing; agency interactions, and the development of permit applications and mitigation plans.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

The position entails a variety of both field and office duties. Field duties will include field sampling and assessment, data collection, and field equipment operation associated with environmental permitting or compliance inspection projects. Office duties will include report writing and preparation, research and historical analysis, preparation of permit documentation and presentation materials, and preparation of mapping and drawings using a Geographical Information System (GIS) and computer-aided drafting (CAD).

The preferred candidate should enjoy working in the outdoors as required to complete job tasks. The job will require, but may not be limited to, certain physical demands while performing duties in the field. These physical requirements will include the ability to walk, stand, kneel, or bend for extended periods of time and be able to carry field equipment and supplies long distances. Field work may be conducted during any time of the year and may occur in a variety of weather and climate conditions, as needed. The candidate is not required to perform field work in hazardous weather conditions. Must be willing to occasionally travel throughout the eastern U.S. for brief (e.g., 1 or 2 week) work efforts.

Required Experience
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree from an accredited college or university in environmental science, biology, ecology, natural resource management, planning or a related field is required for this position.
  • Experience using field guides and dichotomous keys for identification of flora and fauna in the Mid-Atlantic region
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, MicroStation, GIS, and GPS applications


Preferred Experience
  • An active Virginia Department of Environmental Quality Certified Inspector for Stormwater Management (SWM) and Erosion and Sediment Control (ESC)
  • Minimum 2 years' experience performing wetland delineations, preparing permit applications, and preparing NEPA documentation for projects in Virginia


Working Conditions

Work is performed within a general office environment approximately 60% of the time. Office work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Office work is performed with adequate lighting and temperature, with no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc.

Field work is required approximately 40% of the time and is conducted outdoors in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Field work will require walking and carrying field equipment over typical outdoor terrain. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be required as needed.
