Position Summary

Rocky Mountain Institute is seeking exceptional candidates to fill an Associate or Senior Associate position within our Buildings Program's Portfolio Energy Optimization (PEO) initiative, which is creating a disruptive and scalable approach to commercial building retrofits that have been left behind by the traditional retrofit approach. The PEO team is focused on developing a mass-customized approach to identify zero-carbon retrofit packages and evaluate their financial return from the perspective of the building owner. We are seeking a skilled computer programmer to help expand and automated the PEO building energy and financial analysis software. While Associates and Senior Associates at RMI are expected to be generalists capable of contributing to a variety of project teams, this position is dedicated to the Portfolio Energy Optimization team with a focus on software development.

Roles and Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities for this position will include:

Tool Development:
  • Ongoing development of Ruby, Python, and C# code to automate energy simulation and quality control.
  • The PEO team has partnered with a software company to develop the front end of the tool. This role will primarily focus on expanding and automating the energy and financial analysis application.
  • Research and develop data collection approaches, such as accessing public data through APIs.
  • Implement best practices to structure code to be shared with others.
  • Better integrate tool with a database structure.
  • Self-manage tasks to budget and timeline.
  • Add new features leveraging publicly available capabilities such as automatic model calibration and statistical analysis.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • An undergraduate degree in a quantitative subject such as computer science, mathematics, physics, statistics, or data science, and a strong track record of excellent computer programming work.
  • 2+ years of work experience for the Associate level, and 4+ years of experience for the Senior Associate level, and excellent work references.
  • Expertise in object-oriented computer programming, especially Ruby and Python.
  • Experience using SQL to store and manage large data sets.
  • Familiarity with git version control.
  • Experience analyzing and visualizing geospatial data using ArcGIS or similar software packages (e.g. QGIS).
  • Ability to use standard tools (MatPlotLib, Tableau, etc.) to create clear, communicative data visualizations.
  • Excellent quantitative analysis and modeling skills; ability to convert raw data and analysis results into insights.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Excellent writing skills, visual presentation capability, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • High emotional intelligence, curiosity, and a desire to work collaboratively.
  • A passion for advancing market-based solutions to climate change.

  • Ability to be self-motivated and work independently.
  • Ability to listen actively, be diplomatic, and share knowledge and information well.
  • Comfort working with ambiguity and willingness to plunge into unfamiliar disciplines.

Location  

This position will remain remote through the COVID-19 pandemic. Once the COVID-19 situation improves, it is expected that candidates will live near one of RMI's U.S. locations.

Compensation

The starting Associate level salary range is $68,000-$75,000, and the starting Senior Associate salary range is $76,500-$85,000. This is based on experience that will be vetted through the interview process. Both of these positions have a 5% bonus target.
