NDA Professional 1 ($64,400 - $102,000)
The EPC-ES Nondestructive Assay and Green-Is-Clean Program performs non-destructive assay (NDA) processes and methods that are essential to supporting waste characterization and material control and accountability for waste operations across the Los Alamos National Laboratory. The position of NDA Specialist performs analysis, calibration, physical measurements, or data review using NDA equipment, methods, results, or techniques.
A successful candidate will report to and receive direction from the Analysis, Prevention, and Reduction Team Leader and EPC-ES Group Management. This position involves the setup, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of characterization equipment including high purity germanium detectors, sodium iodide detectors, phoswich detectors, and neutron detectors. You will work closely with waste generators and waste management coordinators to consult on NDA matters and schedule work in response to requests to characterize radioactive waste. Other responsibilities include data collection, analysis of assay results, maintaining QA/QC records, maintaining databases, contributing to the generation of Detailed Operating Procedures and other documents, hazardous and radioactive waste management, and waste handling.
NDA Professional 2 ($77,300 - $126,000)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the NDA Professional will be able to execute most matters of nondestructive assay independently and have the skills set and abilities to act as a lead person or technical adviser on small to medium projects related to radioactive waste assay and analysis.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Particle detection and related spectroscopy
Basic knowledge of nondestructive assay principles, theories, concepts, and techniques.
Waste assay
Basic knowledge of operational nondestructive assay including assay of radioactive waste, assay analysis, and assay equipment operation and maintenance, plus related software applications.
Communication: Analysis, consultation and reporting on characterization issues
Basic skills in performing expert technical analyses and/or reviews of characterization data and preparation and presentation of technical reports related to those analyses.
Basic skills to conceptualize and communicate fundamental elements of nondestructive assay to technical and non-technical personnel.
Basic skills to consult on NDA matters and provide innovative solutions to radioactive waste characterization problems. This requires the ability to work well with a diverse project team spanning several skill levels, as well as the willingness and ability to interface with multiple levels of management.
Wastes and nuclear operations
Demonstrated experience handling hazardous, mixed, and radioactive waste in the context of a nuclear facility.

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
- Working knowledge ofnondestructive assay principles, theories, concepts, and techniques.
- Working knowledge of operational nondestructive assay including assay of radioactive waste, assay analysis, and assay equipment operation and maintenance, plus related software applications.
- Experience performing analysis, calibration, physical measurements, or data review using NDA equipment, methods, results, or techniques
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in physical science or engineering or 2 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in physical science or engineering and a minimum of 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
Compliance
Knowledge of the facility safety, security, and compliance envelopes, including experience with waste management policies and procedures and regulatory compliance and tracking for waste.
Equipment and custodian operations
Experience operating forklifts and forklift attachments, and demonstrated experience working with radioactive sealed sources, cryogenic materials, and vacuum pump systems. Experience with Source Custodian duties and coordination of the movement and storage of radioactive sealed sources.
Familiarity with special materials associated with NDA
Experience working with special nuclear materials (plutonium, uranium, etc.) and other common nuclear materials, such as tritium and activation products.
