SUMMARY:

The Environmental Technician coordinates the Clean Water Act Section 319 and Wetland programs. Coordination of programs include, grant development, implementation, and reporting. In addition, this position is responsible for developing and maintaining the Potawatomi Geographic Information System (GIS) database and mapped information to support grant projects, and other Tribal needs for the Reservation. This position includes time in the field with the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) for field survey work supplemental to the Tribal GIS database and air quality monitoring and assessment procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Coordinate grant activities and completes reporting requirements under the Clean Water Act Section 319, General Assistance Program, and Wetland Program Development Grant.
  • Assist with the development of new proposals for federal funding.
  • Develop and conduct outreach and environmental education activities for target populations.
  • Coordinate regularly with state, federal, local agencies in the performance of duties.
  • Develop technical documents, including, but not limited to; Quality Assurance Project Plans, Assessment and Monitoring plans, and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Plan and coordinate watershed restoration projects.
  • May represent the Tribe in regional and/or national Tribal environmental work groups.
  • Perform field tests to monitor water quality and biological habitat.
  • May collect samples of soil, water, and other materials for testing.
  • Assist with corrective plan development to improve the environment.
  • Organizes, develops and maintains the GIS program for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.
  • Participates in training as needed for the continuation of both air quality and GIS programs
  • Provides GIS/GPS education to others.
  • Provides mapping data and assistance to other departments and community membership.
  • Create maps from source data such as survey notes, aerial photography, satellite data, other topographical features, political boundaries and other features.
  • Works cooperatively within the office, Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, and other agencies; as needed
  • All other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Technical Degree or Associates Degree in the field of biology, hydrology, chemistry, environmental science, GIS, computer science or related field.
  • One year of experience or training in an environmental field of work.
  • Experience in grant management with capability to write, administer and report on grants.
  • Expertise of GIS and GPS.
  • Must have a valid Kansas driver's license and be insurable with the Nation's insurance within 90 days of hire.
  • Must be willing to obtain the Hepatitis A/B series of (3) vaccinations within 6 months of hire.
  • Must be available to work the assigned schedule of M-F, 8:00A-4:30P and available as needed to work a flexible schedule to meet the demands of the position, which may include nights, weekends, holiday and overtime.
  • Must be willing to travel on the job, 20% of the time.
  • Must be reliable, punctual and dependable in order to meet the needs of the department and Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.
  • Must possess professional work ethics, manner, and appearance.
  • High level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situation and documentation
  • Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality.
  • Must possess ability to communicate professionally; both orally and in writing a service-orientated approach, sometimes in stressful circumstances.
  • Must possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines with very little supervision.
  • A record of satisfactory attendance and performance in all prior and current employment.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's Degree in the field of biology, hydrology, chemistry, environmental science, GIS, computer science or related field
  • Three years of experience or training in an environmental field of work.
  • Experience in grant management.
  • Experience working with Indian Tribal program.

  • Ability to operate general office equipment, including but not limited to: 10-key calculator, telephone, computer and operating systems, computer software programs (Microsoft Office programs), fax/copier machine.

  • Ability to work in a high-stress, deadline oriented environment
  • Attend out-of-state/out-of-town training periodically to enhance job performance and knowledge.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to have full range of mobility in upper and lower body; be able to reach overhead; be able to work in various positions, including stooping, standing, bending over, sitting, kneeling and squatting for extended periods of time; be able to lift, pull and push materials and equipment to complete assigned job tasks; and be able to frequently lift 20 pounds of weight throughout the assigned workday
  • Exposure to outdoor elements.
