The Chemical/Environmental Engineer or Scientist will support work in the area of sustainable materials management. This position will work with public and private sector clients to conduct analyses characterizing the costs and environmental impacts for waste management strategies and/or stand-alone technologies for recycling, composting, anaerobic digestion, waste-to-energy, or landfill disposal. This position will involve frequent use of spreadsheets, databases, and computer-based modeling and will also include development of waste management related strategy, policy, and best-management practice guidance. Opportunities to work across RTI units and programs for growth and exposure across sectors (i.e., air quality, energy, water, food and agriculture) will be provided. The candidate will work both independently and as a member of multi-disciplinary project teams in RTI's Research Triangle Park, NC Headquarters on a range of activities, including but not limited to:
• Analyzing solid waste management strategies using computer-based tools such as RTI's Municipal Solid Waste Decision Support Tool;
• Analyzing the technical feasibility, cost, and life cycle environmental impacts for traditional and emerging waste management technologies;
• Conducting assessments of the economic and social impacts as related to waste management.
• Conducting analyses to support to vulnerability assessment of waste management infrastructure.
• Preparing waste strategy, policy, and technical guidance documentation.
• Leading and managing projects with public, private and international sector clients.
• Leading and providing input to proposal opportunities.

Minimum Required Education & Experience
• Master's degree in environmental sciences, engineering, or related fields and at least 3 years of relevant work experience; or Bachelor's Degree in environmental sciences, engineering, or related field with 5 years of relevant work experience.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills and proven ability to interact with a diverse and cross-cultural clients and stakeholders.
• Experience with US Environmental Protection Agency's Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) programs and initiatives.
• Excellent interpersonal, networking and presentation skills.
• Excellent knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
• Programming experience using .NET, R and other common languages are desirable.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines under pressure.
• Ability to multi-task.
• Attention to detail, quality control procedures, and accuracy.
• Culturally sensitive and respectful.
