About the Job

We are currently seeking a full-time, mid-level Biologist to join our biological resources team in conducting a variety of field surveys and assessments and to prepare biological reports and biological resource sections of environmental documents. We are particularly interested in someone with both field and documentation experience with particular emphasis on vegetation mapping, general botanical surveys, special-status plant species surveys, as well as experience with wetland characterization and Section 404 jurisdictional delineations. Project work can occur throughout northern and central California, with periodic work in southern California or other locations. Overnight and out of region travel may be necessary. This position can be based out of our Oakland, CA, Sacramento, CA, Bakersfield, CA or Santa Cruz, CA offices.

Duties and Responsibilities

Leads and conducts field studies/surveys, individually or as part of a team, including but not limited to the following:
  • Vegetation mapping and habitat characterization
  • General botanical surveys and inventories
  • Focused surveys and/or habitat assessments for special-status plant species,
  • Jurisdictional delineations pursuant to federal Clean Water Act Section 404; habitat delineations in support of state Section 1600 permitting

Leads and/or works with others in the preparation of technical reports and studies including biological constraints analyses, wetland delineation reports, wetland permit applications, focused survey reports, threatened and endangered species permitting documentation, biological sections of CEQA/NEPA documents, and biological resources technical reports. This includes working individually and as part of a team on the following:
  • Assembly and synthesis of data related to biological issues and impact assessment
  • Coordination with internal staff and sub-consultants preparing technical reports
  • Coordination with technical staff in document preparation, editing, and production and distribution tasks including graphics and GIS staff

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, or related natural resources field.
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years professional experience with environmental consulting and/or resource/regulatory agencies.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with biological resources impact analyses and mitigation identification/planning.
  • Experience with natural communities and vegetation mapping, plant identification (both native California plants and non-natives), and special-status plant species taxonomy and natural history
  • Strong familiarity with California wetland types and systems (freshwater and tidal), northern and central California vegetation community characterization, and experience with state and federal regulatory permitting processes, including U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, California Regional Water Quality Control Board, and California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
  • Attention to detail, ability to work independently and strong written and oral communication skills is essential.
  • Ability to conduct fieldwork in challenging terrain and weather conditions as necessary.
  • Though not required, preference will be given to those who have completed Wetland Delineator training (40-hour course and Arid West Supplement) or demonstrated experience conducting wetland delineations independently pursuant to Clean Water Act Section 404 protocols.
