What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Research Technologist 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Research Technologist 1, $77,300 - $126,000
The successful applicant will, under the guidance of a senior technologist or engineer/scientist, perform advanced chemical separations of elements from a variety of matrices (primarily environmental) in support of national security projects. The technologist will maintain a focus on routinely providing the highest purity separated samples for analysis by thermal ionization and inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry, while maintaining the low background cleanliness of the laboratories. Working with peers, the technologist will be responsible for the development, implementation, and completion of project objectives and will communicate results through internal reports, progress reports to sponsors, or formal presentations. The technologist will have significant responsibility for the safety/security and the QA envelope of the project. The technologist will perform work and follow the procedures in accordance with all applicable safety and security practices. Work is directly related to national security objectives and requires the individual to protect and maintain sensitive or classified information.Occasional work exercises may require working extended hours.
Research Technologist 2, $85,400 - $139,600
In addition to the duties outlined above, the Technologist 2 will, in collaboration with a senior technologist or engineer/scientist, perform technical work requiring advanced knowledge of radiochemical separations procedures and isotope dilution techniques. The Technologist 2 will contribute to the growth and productivity of the team by developing novel techniques for new analytes, streamlining operations to maximize sample throughput, and designing/executing experiments to test method improvements.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated experience with inorganic, analytical and/or radiochemistry
- Proven ability to develop scientific solutions for analytical problems
- Proven ability to work independently with initiative
- Proven ability to provideday-to-day operational sample processing and technical support while maintaining progress on long term experimental tasks
- Basic computer skills including use of Microsoft office products
- Demonstrated experience with data validation, analytical data report generation, and in meeting programmatic QA/QC requirements
- Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance, which normally requires US Citizenship

Additional Job Requirements for Research Technologist 2:
- Background in analytical method development
- Ability to prepare research documentation and provide peer-review of documentation
- Ability to contribute ideas to scientific proposals and co-author scientific publications
- Demonstrated technical leadership in area of expertise.
Education/Experience for Technologist 1:
Position requires a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and a minimum of 2 years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in Chemistry, Physical or Life Sciences, Nuclear Engineering, or related field.
Education/Experience for Technologist 2:
Position requires a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in Chemistry, Physical or Life Sciences, Nuclear Engineering, or related field.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience working in a cleanroom environment
- Familiarity with thermal ionization mass spectrometry and/or inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry
- Experience chemically separating actinides from environmental or nuclear matrices
- Working knowledge of ion exchange, solvent extraction, and/or other chromatographic techniques
- Familiarity with ISO 17025, the QSM, MARLAP, and/or other QA/QC certifications and standards
- Experience developing standard operating procedures
- Experience with optical microscopy
- Experience with isotope dilution calculations
- Experience with radiometric decay calculations
- Understanding of uncertainty concepts and the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement
- Q clearance

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
