Job Overview
Responsible for managing the environmental compliance program for Thomas Built Buses including periodic reporting, ISO program management, and internal program management
Responsibilities
- Develop environmental strategy for site in consideration of upcoming and existing regulations, external and internal standards and guidelines, social local context. Implement policy by updating/influencing environmental/energy objectives/targets program
- Provide leadership to the core team by thinking strategically and establishing direction, while focusing on customer needs
- Investigate, analyze, interpret and communicate the impact of existing and future environmental legislation, guidelines, etc. on the plant.
- Report regularly to plant management and central environmental functions in accordance with requirements of statutory provisions relevant to the site and future environmental legislation, guidelines etc.
- Advise and support plant management on legal compliance, developments and conflicts, on the communication with public authorities and general public in the event of major incidents (image), on the sale and purchase of land (contaminated sites, environmental impact assessment etc.), complaints by neighbors, etc.
- Conduct negotiations with public authorities on behalf of plant management in connection with for example implementation of legal rules, infringement of legal requirements, occurrence of environmental accidents, etc.
- Conduct permitting procedures (pollution control, soil protection and water conservation, noise abatement, waste management), i.e. clarify legal framework, draw up legally compliant concepts and ensure they are covered by expert opinions.
- Negotiate scope of licensing documents with public authorities, and compile and submit such documents, assist public authorities/general public (public-law procedures), investigate officially imposed conditions.
- Obtain and maintain environmental permits and licenses as may be required to conduct manufacturing operations
- Develop and introduce an environmental communications concept for external target groups of local relevance (e.g. neighbors, community, schools, etc.).
- Write environmental reports, statements, brochures etc. for the plant.
- Manage waste disposal and recycling activities
- Prepare and implement an internal environmental communications strategy (target groups, methods, ...), e.g.
- Design and implement target-group-oriented training strategies and programs for managers, facility operators, planners, developers, etc.).
- Implement internal and external environmental evaluations and audits (suppliers, service providers, etc.).
- Develop and update environmental emergency plans. Coordinate emergency response activities.
- Give clearance for substances; develop and constantly update substance clearance (register of hazardous goods and substances at the workplace).
- Review and manage outside consultants, vendors, & contractors
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience)
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering OR Chemical Engineering or related fields required
- 4 years' experience in Environmental Engineering in a manufacturing setting required
- Project management including dynamic timelines and multiple stake holders required
- Communication and presentation skills including ability to present technical information at executive level required
- Organizational skills to manage multiple systems, projects, people and priorities required
- Working knowledge of Federal & State environmental regulations, OSHA and DOT regulations required

Typical Minimum Experience Preferred (Desired Skills/Experience)
- 5-7 years of related experience preferred
- Professional expertise in one or two of the major environmental media areas (air emissions, releases to water, contamination of soil- and groundwater, waste management, hazardous materials management) and functional expertise in all environmental protection related regulatory areas and expert-level knowledge in environmental management systems preferred.
- Excellent communication skills to work effectively with others including regulatory representatives preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office preferred
