Hatch's Urban Solutions practice brings together extensive experience consulting on major infrastructure projects for urban clients with a new focus on strategic, advisory, economic and planning consultancy. Our team provides front-end advising services for cities undergoing change driven by economic growth, climate change and urbanization. The team delivers solutions that are sustainable, resilient and smart to global clients.

The primary emphasis of our team is Urban Economics and Advisory work around large-scale planning, real estate development and infrastructure projects. We do this through the application of rigorous economic planning techniques and the development innovative analytical approaches to a variety of complex planning, real estate and infrastructure challenges. We also work closely with other Hatch offices and practices around the globe.

Qualified candidates will have excellent analytical and communications skills with professional experience in consulting in the field of economics and planning. The candidate must have a track record of applying quantitative and analytical approaches to the development of innovative solutions to complex challenges such as urban development, climate change and social equity facing cities, regions, and other private, public, and non-profit entities.

The Economic Planner Consultant will bve based out of our Ambler, PA office and will take ownership of tasks required for project delivery, serves as an individual contributor as well as directs analysts and other staff during project execution, and provides support for Project Managers and Senior Leaders in the group. Tasks include introductory level project administration and management, undertaking, performing, coordinating, and communicating foundational research, coordinating and implementing research approaches as defined by project leadership teams, and communicating and coordinating research findings in the form of concise memoranda, presentations, charts and graphics.

Analyses to be undertaken include quantitative and qualitative analyses in areas such as economic and fiscal impact studies, benefit-cost analysis and cost of inaction in the context of climate change, market analysis and financial feasibility analyses for urban development/redevelopment; funding and financing feasibility studies for infrastructure in the context of climate adaptation, urbanization and technological change, case-study research on trends in urbanization, transportation, energy and economic development; and socio-economic analyses for economic policy development, infrastructure and major real estate development projects.

Education, Skill, and Ability Requirements:

  • Undergraduate Degree in economics, planning, environmental studies, or a related field, and 4-6 years of work experience, with at least 2 years in consulting. An advanced degree in planning, real estate, economics or other associated fields is advantageous.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of urban planning, real estate, economics, finance, land use and environmental policy.
  • Project execution experience: experience supporting the delivery of defined scopes of work to clients and internal reporting/tracking project progress.
  • Quantitative skills; experience with real estate economics, pro forma modeling, and market analysis is required; experience in financial and/or economic analysis and modeling would be beneficial.
  • Ability to undertake research and compile information on a variety of planning issues from multiple sources; prepare and present submissions/reports to support projects and ensure quality deliverables.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and tasks being performed individually and by a small team of 1-2 analysts through proactive, clear communication with senior project managers and senior leaders.
  • Detail oriented and outcome focused with a willingness to collaborate within and beyond the internal team and a desire to work in a dynamic, deadline driven environment. An entrepreneurial and "can do" attitude, with an ability to work toward solutions despite real world constraints of limited data.
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office Suite, with a focus on Excel, PowerPoint, with basic InDesign familiarity.
