An internship at TechSoup is not just a learning experience; it is an opportunity to make an impactful and meaningful contribution. You will get to work on inspiring and challenging projects that drive goals and support our mission.

We're a high-impact, global nonprofit social enterprise that believes in using technology for the greater good. Since 1987, we've been building partnerships and alliances with individuals, corporations, nonprofits, and governments across the globe - all committed to helping nonprofits fully access the profound power of technology and a connected world - and use it to improve lives.

The remote summer internship program at TechSoup provides students the chance to develop practical business skills, learn about the nonprofit sector, and develop networking and community-building skills in a supportive and dynamic nonprofit environment. Through our curated program, interns gain a deeper understanding of the educational, cultural, and technical aspects of civil society and the work achieved by global and local nonprofits and community-based organizations in the social sector.

This is a paid, remote position. Candidates must be available to work within normal PST time-zone working hours (8:00 AM PST to 4:30 PM PST or 9:00 AM PST to 5:30 PM PST, typically).

The Research and Content Internship will work for the Office of the CEO. This is for students looking to grow their knowledge of the nonprofit, NGO, and civil society sector while also contributing to the needs and knowledge base of C-level executives. This internship is great for students interested in a career in international relations, policy-making, civic affairs, global affairs, or library science.

The Office of the CEO is looking for help to develop an executive-level "Digital Knowledge and Inspiration Center" for a variety of issue areas, for direct use by TechSoup's CEO and other executives. The purpose of this center is for executives to have actionable information at the ready for last-minute speaking engagements, issue area-based meetings, or other networking opportunities.

The information will relate to the work TechSoup does as a global network and its greater goals of supporting and enabling digital transformation across various segments and issue areas within civil society.

At the end of the internship, interns will have learned about trends in the sector that are changing, evolving, and emerging across the different issue areas that are researched. Note: we define "issue areas" as segments or mission-based topics within civil society, such as domestic violence, food security, human rights, conservation, food security, etc.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Overall: Research and collate relevant information on issue areas as it relates to technology and civil society from internal and external sources; compile articles, research NGO impact examples, and create a bibliography of references.
  • Develop a workflow and template that can be reused for each overview or profile.
  • Create a minimum of 2 overviews or profiles detailing sector-level information, prominent organizations, key funders, impact examples, identifying trends from our internal data, and talking points by different issue areas - from domestic violence and food insecurity to climate change/conservation, human rights, and more.
  • Create a document repository for the completed profiles.
  • Upon completing each overview or profile, create a "Loom" video giving a 2 min overview of what information is found within that profile that was created.
  • At the end of your internship, present a 30-minute overview of your work and a "blue sky view" into the sector at large, including what surprised you, trends we should know about, and gaps we should fill, if any.
  • Other projects may be discussed and added on an as needed basis based on the intern's bespoke interests in the sector or our organization at large, as we desire to foster your passions and pursuits within Civil Society.

Education and Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience providing the skill and knowledge for successful participation and learning in the internship would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
  • Must be actively and presently enrolled in an accredited college or university at an undergraduate or graduate level; or graduated in the spring semester and applying for a post-graduation internship to gain experience.
  • You must have a functioning laptop to use throughout the summer.
  • At least 1-2 years of experience in data analytics, communications, international relations, global affairs, and/or library science.
  • Social networking and non-profit business model knowledge preferred.
  • Awareness and aptitude for international relations or global affairs
  • Diplomacy and teamwork
  • Technical/functional skills needed:
    • Experience with data visualization tools, like PowerBI preferred
    • Experience writing PR/Communications materials preferred
    • Experience with statistics and data science preferred
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, including under pressure and occasional ambiguity.
  • Interact in a professional manner with a wide variety of people, including executives.
  • Pays close attention to detail while also keeping eyes on the big picture.
  • Eager and excited to contribute to the Civil Society sector. Within the sector, you see yourself as a future CEO, CMO, or CIO of a nonprofit or NGO organization.
