Role Summary
The Oncology Research and Development (ORD) division is seeking a Director of Tumor Biology, to join a high caliber, productive team to discover breakthrough medicines for cancer patients. Specifically, this Director will lead research to explore cancer biology associated with drug resistance, oncogene networks, tumor heterogeneity and identify new candidate therapeutics aimed at novel targets and previously "undruggable" targets.
Areas of responsibility will range from exploratory research through early clinical development. The incumbent will report to the Vice President of Tumor Biology, will lead a team of about 15-20 scientists, and will collaborate effectively with various scientists from our other oncology research groups, and our partners in Medicinal Chemistry, Biomedicine Design, Drug Safety, and Clinical Oncology.
Role Responsibilities
Efficiently advance a portfolio of novel cancer drug programs, overseeing planning, setting goals and priorities, guiding experimentation, and managing team leaders in alignment with ORD strategy.
Apply deep expertise in new and emerging areas of cancer biology, including oncogene signaling, tumor heterogeneity, drug resistance, and challenging target classes such as transcription factors.
Apply broad expertise in cutting edge cancer drug discovery technologies, including relevant cancer model systems, protein degraders and covalent binders, chemical biology screening, phenotypic screening, functional genomics, single cell analysis, and computational biology.
Ensure scientific rigor across the team and strategically deploy resources to support Tumor Biology and ORD goals
Communicate effectively with partners across the company to influence strategy, guide research, make decisions, and efficiently manage resources.
Contribute to a culture that values teamwork, collegiality, accountability, and continuous learning and improvement.
Proactively facilitate professional growth and scientific development of Tumor Biology and ORD staff.
Qualifications
Candidate demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including: the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, oversee and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact.
Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. plus a minimum of ten years of experience in cancer biology and/or cancer drug discovery.
Biopharmaceutical industry experience preferred but not required.
Experience in small molecule cancer drug discovery and development, preferably from target discovery through early clinical development, including translational studies.
Record of success in drug discovery/development and/or peer-reviewed publication of significant research findings.
Demonstrated ability to manage a team of scientists and promote individual career development.
Record of successful initiating and managing external collaborations.
Demonstrated ability to innovate new solutions and identify promising new directions.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
