What You Will Do
We are seeking a post-doctoral candidate to join the Climate, Ocean and Sea-Ice Modeling (COSIM) Team, which develops advanced ocean and ice models. Specific topics of research may include: time stepping, advection, isopycnal and hybrid vertical coordinates, sub-ice shelf modeling, and coupling between components. Responsibilities would include algorithm design, implementation and verification using modern software engineering practices. This work will contribute to the Department of Energy's Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). A particular focus of E3SM is fully-coupled, global, high-resolution simulations of the Earth system. Within this broad activity, Los Alamos National Laboratory's responsibilities include optimizing algorithms and code performance for DOE high performance computing platforms; studying the role of ocean dynamics and mesoscale eddies in the climate system; and simulating the interaction of ocean, sea ice, and ice shelves to study their influence on climate change and sea-level rise.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
The successful candidate needs to have experience in the broad fields of computational physics, ocean modeling, and/or climate modeling. We seek candidates with diverse research experience with a preference for applicants with one or more of the following: experience in construction and application of physical models; programing expertise; and the analysis and incorporation of data and observations for model development and testing. The candidate will have also demonstrated scientific excellence as evidenced by submission or publication of authored publications in refereed journals, and/or the ability to create or improve computational software. The ability to work in a highly collaborative team setting is also a requirement.
Education/Experience :A Ph.D. in applied mathematics, computational science, physics, earth sciences, fluid dynamics, climate modeling, civil engineering, geophysics, or a closely related field. Exceptional candidates with an M.S. and relevant experience will also be considered.
Note to Applicants:
In addition to applying on-line, please send curriculum vitae , names of three references, and a one-page cover letter detailing qualifications, research interests, and proposed research directions to Mark Petersen, mpetersen@lanl.gov . Please include "LANL Ocean Modeling Application" in the email subject line. Applications will be reviewed as received.
