CSS seeks a master's level graduate intern to provide short-term support for a project titled "Keep it in the System". The project is being conducted by NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS), Marine Spatial Ecology Division, Coastal Restoration and Resilience Branch (CRRA) in collaboration with Duke University.

Core Responsibilities:

The successful applicant must be able to perform the scientific technical services described below.
  • Create Story Maps for NC and FL ‘Keep it in the System' project.

  • Story maps will include all aspects of the Keep it in the System (KITS) process, including sources/location of dredged material, identified potential dredge deposition locations, extent of marsh and seagrass habitat, public and private lands, existing and planned NBBF projects and vulnerable infrastructure. In addition, results from separate modeling efforts (SLAMM, MEM, UVVR, marsh migration space, Wave Energy Model, blue Carbon storage and sequestration rates, marsh migration space) will be incorporated when available. Data layers or shapefiles for each of these parameters will be provided by the NOAA project team. The extent of the story map displays will be an approximate 10 sq mile area around Beaufort, NC and Jacksonville, NC.

The intended audiences for the story maps are stakeholders in each project area (North Carolina and Florida), other coastal resource managers interested in beneficial use of dredged material, and coastal scientists. Story map presentations must include data and web maps, methods, and fact sheets, all of which must be developed in collaboration with principal investigators (PI) for NCCOS' Early Seal Level Rise (ESLR) projects (i.e., Currin, Davis, Cohen, Whitin, Cerny-Chipman, Welp). The final story map products will be hosted on the NCCOS website as well as on the technical services provider's web site.

Although most of the data to be included in story maps for North Carolina have already been compiled, organization and integration of additional datasets and model outputs (e.g., MEM, WEMo, SLAMM and UVVR models) is needed. The target completion Date for North Carolina Story Maps is June 30, 2021. The target completion Date for Florida story map is September30, 2021.

  • Participate as a co-author in publication describing site-selection process.

  • Help to prepare drafts of methods and results, help prepare final figures, for technical memorandum and/or peer-reviewed journal publication summarizing the project results.

    Required Qualifications:
    • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in Biology, Ecology, Marine Science, Geography, Oceanography, or similar field, with 1-2 years of professional experience.
    • Must currently be enrolled in a graduate program, preferably in Coastal North Carolina.
    • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS Suite of software products.
    • Experience with creating Story Maps.
    • Demonstrated ability to independently organize and analyze data.
    • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral scientific communication skills.
    • Demonstrated experience working independently and with a team.
