Job Description
The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a postdoctoral research associate to help expand and test coastal modeling capabilities within E3SM (https://e3sm.org) within the ICoM (https://climatemodeling.science.energy.gov/projects/integrated-coastal-modeling-icom ) project. The incumbent will work on (1) estuarine and coastal ocean test cases comparing MPAS-O with other standard community ocean models (e.g., ROMS, FVCOM, and/or GETM); (2) analysis and interpretation of MPAS-O results to understand and improve representation of physical processes; and (3) cross-cutting issues in coastal and estuarine processes, for example coupling with land surface models to improve projections of sediment distributions and estuarine hypoxia. The incumbent will work in close collaboration with atmospheric and computational scientists at PNNL, LANL, and various universities.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications
Required qualifications:
- A Ph.D. in oceanography, civil and environmental engineering, or a related field;
- Demonstrated experience in running coastal ocean models (e.g., ROMS, FVCOM, or GETM);
- A solid foundation in buoyancy driven flow in estuaries and/or the coastal ocean;
- Fluency in Fortran and Python.
Preferred qualification:
- Experience contributing to open source projects on GitHub;
- Experience with high-performance computing environments;
- Experience with the Pangeo software stack, including xarray and dask;
- Strong interpersonal communication skills;
- Demonstrated ability to publish work in peer-reviewed journals;
- Strong team player with the willingness and ability to work independently.
