Job Description
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado, is the nation's primary laboratory for research, development, and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The National Bioenergy Center at NREL has an opening for a full time Postdoctoral Researcher within the Biological Process Development group. The initial appointment is for one year, with possible renewal up to three years.
The National Bioenergy Center is conducting research to improve biomass conversion to fuels, chemicals, and materials.
- Successful candidates will work in the Agile BioFoundry project to conduct modeling of metabolic pathways, computational systems biology, and machine learning towards the production of renewable chemicals from biomass-derived sugars in collaboration with a large, multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional team.
- Candidates will work with systems biology and computational biology tools throughout their postdoctoral tenure to make direct recommendations to improve strain performance, develop new methods to integrate and learn from multi-omics datasets, and to examine pan-scale performance of engineered microbial strains.
- This work will lead to industrially relevant strain performance through Design-Build-Test-Learn and scale-up activities.
- Author peer-reviewed publications, andwork effectively in a large, multidisciplinary team of biologists, chemists, and engineers.
- Co-design the planning and execution of research with other researchers.
- Communicate scientific results effectively, both in written and oral formats.
- Work both independently and collaboratively as needed.

Basic Qualifications
Must be a recent PhD graduate within related field in the last three years.

Additional Required Qualifications
- Research experience in computational biology, bioinformatics, biological systems modeling, flux balance analysis, and machine learning.
- Demonstrated experience in Python and/or other relevant programming languages.
- Demonstrated systems biology experience.
- PhD degree in Biological Engineering, Molecular Biology, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate scientific results effectively, both in written and oral formats.
- Author of impactful peer-reviewed publications.
- Ability to work effectively in a large, multidisciplinary team of biologists, chemists, and engineers.
- Ability to co-design the planning and execution of research with other researchers.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated experience co-designing the planning and execution of research with other researchers.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Annual Salary Range: $68,000 - $112,200
Offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. NREL takes into consideration a candidate's education, training, and experience, as well as the position's work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee's salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
